Evaluation Period:

  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per WCS Performance and Assessment Procedures.
  • Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.


Purpose of the Position:

Responsible of the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the building to which the employee is assigned. It is the responsibility of the Head Custodian to ensure that the facilities are maintained in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety. The Head Custodian has supervisory responsibility over the other custodians including seasonal custodial employees. Safety, cleanliness, and continued efficiency of operation shall be a major goal at all times.


Minimum Requirements:
The following are the qualifications and minimum requirements necessary for a person to perform this job.

  • A minimum of a high school diploma with demonstrable leadership skills and experience in a supervisory capacity
  • Must be team oriented and able to effectively deal with people.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts or be called out after hours.
  • Must be willing to operate heavy machinery if needed.


Essential Functions of the Position:
The following functions have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.

  • Perform and oversee repair and maintenance of all equipment, buildings, and grounds of the district. Recommend to the Director of Buildings and Grounds or District Administrator the purchase and replacement of maintenance equipment and custodial supplies.
  • Provide daily maintenance/cleaning where needed including the removal of snow/ice.
  • Meet on a regular basis with the building principal or Director of Buildings and Grounds to review needed maintenance work and purchase of supplies.
  • Assign work schedules for custodial staff.
  • Direct the work of custodial staff.
  • Present price comparisons and specifications of needed custodial supplies.
  • Consult the building principal as to needed maintenance.
  • Make weekly inspections of all buildings and grounds including weekend building checks.
  • Assists in the recruitment, employment, assignment, transfer, promotion, demotion, or dismissal of custodial and maintenance personnel.
  • Assist in the evaluation of custodial staff.
  • Maintain necessary records as required.
  • Coordinate vacation schedules.
  • Administer the budget for maintenance, grounds, and custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Implement a program of preventive maintenance.
  • Understand and implement safety procedures as required by the district.
  • Support and enforce policies established by the Director of Building and Grounds.


Secondary Functions of the Position:
The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed or as directed by the Director of Buildings and Grounds or Building Principal.


Knowledge of:

  • Policies, procedures and functions of Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees and the Indiana Department of Education


Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, and schedule priorities.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
  • Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.


Equipment Used:

  • Cleaning and mechanical tools and equipment.


Place Where Work is Performed:

  • Assigned Wa-Nee Community Schools building


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
  • Must be able to lift items of 50 lbs. regularly/100 lbs. occasionally.
