Job Description
This position provides technical support for Distribution Management Systems (DMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, as well as related technical infrastructure used in Distribution and Transmission Operations Centers. The role requires a high degree of adaptability, strong customer focus, and a commitment to continuous improvement of operational systems.
Essential Job Functions
DMS / EMS / SCADA Operations Support
- Provide technical support to ensure reliable operation of DMS, EMS, and SCADA systems.
- Assist and guide less-experienced analysts in troubleshooting and problem resolution.
- Train lower-level analysts on specific equipment, tools, and software support activities.
- Maintain reliable real-time operations of DMS/EMS and SCADA platforms.
- Analyze system performance and recommend improvements to enhance the quality and reliability of DMS/EMS and SCADA data and related services.
- Maintain and support real-time data interfaces.
- Develop, enhance, implement, and maintain DMS/EMS and SCADA tools and software.
- Ensure DMS/EMS and SCADA systems remain current with evolving technologies.
- Build, maintain, and update custom DMS/EMS and SCADA online displays.
- Perform modeling, checkout, and commissioning of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).
- Build, validate, and maintain DMS/EMS and SCADA system models.
- Define and recommend internal DMS/EMS and SCADA standards and best practices.
- Define and implement Human Performance Initiative (HPI) rules and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to SCADA processes.
Protection & Control (P&C) SCADA Support
- Provide technical support to Protection & Control Engineering (PCE) teams for SCADA standards and production activities related to Distribution and client Transmission systems.
- Assist with standards development, project scoping, RTU settings creation, and troubleshooting during implementation.
- Scope small to medium SCADA projects with limited supervision and provide detailed scoping feedback to Distribution, PCE, and Telecommunications teams.
- Identify issues in processes and tools, propose viable solutions, and provide input to senior team members.
- Complete complex RPA activities involving both new and legacy systems with limited supervision.
- Configure RTUs for both modern and legacy environments with minimal supervision.
- Expand communication technology knowledge, including legacy applications (Async, Sync, etc.).
- Support internal and external stakeholders with common SCADA-related issues.
- Configure alarms and basic I/O (2411 settings) for both greenfield and brownfield projects.
- Implement SCADA standards with limited guidance from senior team members.
- Assist senior personnel with overall SCADA compliance initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field from an accredited institution
- OR
- High school diploma with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant military or electric utility technical experience.
Experience
- Three (3) years of DMS/EMS/SCADA experience with an Associate’s degree.
- Five (5) years of DMS/EMS/SCADA experience with a high school diploma.
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and at least one (1) year of DMS/EMS/SCADA experience may be considered for entry at this level.
Technical Knowledge
Demonstrated, in-depth knowledge in at least two (2) of the following areas:
- Application development
- Operating system support
- Computer systems administration
- Database technologies and support
Additional Requirements & Skills
- Strong understanding of operational practices for applicable DMS/EMS/SCADA equipment and software.
- Proven experience working with SCADA systems.
- Excellent communication, organization, facilitation, and problem-resolution skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Understanding of business unit and operating company systems is preferred.
- Willingness to provide after-hours support for EMS/SCADA systems as needed.
- Ability to learn and apply new technologies used by the client.
- Basic understanding of Protection & Control applications and their impact on SCADA systems.
- Developing knowledge of substation equipment functions with guidance from senior team members.
