Travel: Travel to project locations required; approximately 50% preferred

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Special Projects Superintendent - Landscaping to lead reclamation, landscaping, and specialty land management projects from mobilization through completion.

This is a field-based leadership position for an experienced Superintendent, Foreman, Crew Leader, or Field Supervisor who is comfortable managing crews, operating heavy equipment, coordinating daily field activities, and taking ownership of projects from start to finish.

The successful candidate will lead field crews of approximately 5-15 employees, ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently, communicate project progress and challenges to management, and maintain a clean and organized job site.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving problems in the field, leading by example, and is willing to operate equipment and work alongside their crew when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Field Supervision

• Manage and oversee reclamation, landscaping, land management, and special projects from mobilization through completion.
• Take ownership of daily project execution and ensure work is completed according to project requirements.
• Coordinate field activities, manpower, equipment, materials, and daily priorities.
• Monitor project progress and identify potential issues before they impact schedule or productivity.
• Communicate project status, field conditions, equipment needs, challenges, and resource requirements to management.
• Work independently while maintaining alignment with company objectives and project expectations.
• Ensure projects remain organized, productive, and on schedule.
  
  

Crew Leadership & Management

• Lead and supervise field crews consisting of approximately 5-15 employees.
• Assign daily tasks and responsibilities based on project requirements and employee capabilities.
• Provide direction, coaching, and hands-on leadership to field personnel.
• Monitor crew productivity, quality of work, attendance, and adherence to project requirements.
• Lead by example and be willing to work alongside the crew when necessary.
• Maintain effective communication with employees throughout the project.
• Help create a positive, accountable, and safety-focused field environment.
  
  

Heavy Equipment Operation

• Safely operate heavy equipment as required to complete project work.
• Operate skid steers, excavators, loaders, and other construction/landscaping equipment.
• Perform equipment-related work while maintaining awareness of crew members, site conditions, utilities, and surrounding property.
• Conduct basic equipment inspections and communicate maintenance or repair needs.
• Ensure equipment is used appropriately and safely for each task.
• Coordinate equipment utilization to maximize crew productivity.
  
  

Reclamation & Landscaping Projects

• Lead field activities associated with reclamation and specialty land management projects.
• Support site preparation, grading, clearing, restoration, landscaping, and related field activities as required.
• Interpret project requirements and translate them into daily field tasks.
• Monitor work quality and ensure completed work meets project expectations.
• Identify changing site conditions and develop practical field solutions.
• Assist with mobilization, demobilization, equipment movement, and project closeout.
  
  

Safety & Job Site Management

• Ensure company safety procedures and project-specific safety requirements are followed.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional job site.
• Promote safe operating practices for heavy equipment and field activities.
• Identify potential hazards and take appropriate corrective action.
• Ensure crew members follow applicable safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Support a strong safety culture through daily leadership and communication.
  
  

Communication & Reporting

• Provide management with regular updates regarding project progress.
• Communicate labor, equipment, material, scheduling, and site-related needs.
• Report delays, safety concerns, equipment issues, and other project challenges promptly.
• Maintain clear communication with management and field personnel.
• Escalate significant project issues when additional support or resources are required.
  
  

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of landscaping superintendent experience or closely related field leadership experience.
• Previous experience supervising construction, landscaping, reclamation, environmental, land management, or similar field crews.
• Demonstrated experience leading crews of approximately 5-15 employees.
• Experience operating skid steers and excavators.
• Experience operating loaders or other heavy construction/landscaping equipment.
• Strong field leadership and crew-management skills.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects.
• Valid driver's license.
• Clean driving record.
• Reliable transportation to and from the company's primary work location.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Ability and willingness to travel to project locations as required.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a Landscaping Superintendent, Construction Superintendent, Foreman, Crew Leader, or Field Supervisor.
• Experience with reclamation or specialty land management projects.
• Experience with grading, site preparation, clearing, restoration, or land improvement.
• Experience operating multiple types of heavy equipment.
• Experience working on projects outside the company's normal service area.
• Experience managing projects from mobilization through completion.
• Previous experience working in a hands-on field leadership environment.

Special projects and reclamation work may occur outside the company's normal service area. The current project work includes Danville, VA, and future projects may require employees to work away from their home location.
