POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: School Counselor - Secondary Level
FLSA: Exempt Professional
QUALIFICATIONS:
Texas Teachers Certification
Master’s Degree or its equivalent in guidance counseling
Thorough understanding of school operations
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Three years' experience as a classroom teacher
Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal and career development
Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and community
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Plan and conduct structured group lessons to deliver district's guidance curriculum effectively in accordance with students' developmental needs.
- Guide students and parents to plan, monitor, and manage the student's own educational and career development.

Use accepted theories and effective techniques of developmental guidance to counsel individual students and parents to plan and manage student's personal and social development.

Provide preventive, remedial, and crisis counseling as needed.

Coordinate school, home, and community resources and refer students, parents, and others to special programs and services as needed.

Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.

Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.

Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.

Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and teachers.

Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
- Use an effective referral process to assist students and others to use special programs and services.

Interpret standardized test results and assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and planning and communicate to parents.

Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure they meet identified needs, priorities and program objectives.

Plan, implement, evaluate, and promote continuous improvement of a balanced comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program that includes guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support components.

Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the campus guidance center program.
