Job Description:

As the engines of the Institute, the Residence Counselors & Mentors (RCMs) are responsible for ensuring students' safety and well-being, as well as managing and overseeing the Institute's day- to-day operations. General duties include but are not limited to: attending classes to observe student performance; organizing leadership workshops; tutoring students; accompanying students on field trips; mentoring students; and organizing recreational activities.

Requirements:

  • Minimum: juniors or seniors at undergraduate colleges/universities with a desire for post-undergraduate study. College graduates, current graduate school students or post-graduate school students are welcomed.
  • 3.0 Overall GPA
  • All majors welcomed
  • Experience with residential life and/or experience working with middle school aged children and older highly preferred.

  • Residential stay in a Princeton University dormitory is required.
  • Compensation for this position ranges from $3,000-$3,200.

Program Dates: June 17-July 25 (includes staff orientation)

Responsibilities:

Residential and Supervision Duties

  • Consistently and fairly enforce all building and program rules; including but not limited to: conducting rounds to monitor building and room curfews, quiet and study hour observations, building mobility restrictions (i.e. students are not allowed to visit other floors than their own).
  • Be familiar with and fairly enforce rules, regulations, and policies set by the administration.
  • Engaged participation in all weekday and weekend excursions, events, and activities.
  • Promptly respond to any student emergencies.
  • Travel with and supervise students on and off campus.
  • Take attendance and gathering students.
  • Take pictures and videos for the closing ceremony video. Compose closing ceremony video if needed.
  • Student safety:
  • Accompanying and monitoring students in residence, during travel and in workshops;
  • Room checks at curfew;
  • After curfew rounds;
  • Knowledge on the whereabouts of all students under their charge.
  • Setting an example for students:
  • Mentoring students;
  • Business casual attire;
  • Setting of professional and authoritative boundaries.

Academic and Leadership Duties

  • Observe student behavior and classroom dynamics by attending student classes on a rotating schedule.
  • Recognize and address any student issues, conflicts and/or challenges that may arise;
  • Assist faculty instructors in the classroom when needed. This may include but is not limited to monitoring students, performing technological assistance\intervention and teacher assisting.
  • Demonstrate a willingness and interest to tutor, guide and advise students with academic, personal, and interpersonal concerns as is within your range of expertise, comfort, and programmatic boundaries.
  • Engaged participation and creation in social justice and leadership development workshops to be held with students and other RCMs.
  • Begin the planning of leadership development workshops and other activities in the weeks before the program commences.

Collaborative Duties

  • Attend weekly residence staff meetings.
  • Engage in collaborative and respectful efforts with other residence life staff and youth groups who may reside in the same dorm building.
  • Remain in reasonable cell phone contact (via a designated messaging app) with students, fellow RCMs, the Director of Residence Life, and other administrative staff.
  • Collaborate with the Health Manager to help students who are experiencing medical issues or students who enter isolation due to contraction of COVID-19. This may include but is not limited to procuring and distributing meals for students who may enter isolation due to COVID-19.
  • Collaborate with fellow RCMs, Senior Program Manager, Program Manager, and Director of Residence Life to plan extracurricular activities including but not limited to the student talent show, sports and recreation, icebreakers, and workshop development

Location/Residency:

RCMs will be working for the W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute, a non-profit organization hosted at Princeton University. Each RCM will have a room in a dorm on campus at Princeton University. RCMs will be living in the dorm building with student participants of the program as well as other RCM's/staff. Room and board are covered by the Institute.

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $3,000.00 - $3,200.00 per month
