What You’ll Do
Key responsibilities include:
- Prepare estimates for multiple semi-routine projects as assigned.
- Review project plans, drawings, and specifications; attend pre-bid meetings to determine scope and requirements.
- Work with the Project Assistant to obtain and review project plan documents and specifications.
- Perform complete takeoffs of the scope of work and incorporate historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity reports) to generate accurate unit and labor hour figures.
- Coordinate with Purchasing Agents on materials, equipment pricing, and total estimating effort.
- Develop project schedules and maintain organized project calendars.
- Obtain multiple bids from vendors and subcontractors, negotiate pricing, and determine appropriate project resources.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and potential clients to develop competitive proposals or bids; assist with RFP responses.
- Deliver final and updated project documentation to the Project Manager once a bid or project is approved.
- May seek new project opportunities within the division.
- Lead and execute a majority of tasks for semi-complex projects, workflows, or processes that may influence future team or departmental operations.
- Exercise good judgment to analyze multiple factors and determine solutions.
- Escalate complex issues to mid-management for guidance or resolution.
- Mentor and review the work of less-experienced estimators; may assist in training.
- Regularly interact with clients, contractors, Purchasing Agents, and Project Managers.
- Receive assignments from leadership and follow established procedures; work is subject to close and regular oversight depending on project complexity.
What We’re Looking For
- Demonstrated proficiency in most core estimating functions with deeper expertise in one or more specialized areas.
- Acts as a subject matter expert or “go-to” resource for others within the discipline.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Construction-based cost estimating methods, techniques, and best practices
- Labor, material, and equipment cost sources
- Electrical, Security/AV/Network, Traffic, and/or Telecom project components
- Written and verbal communication, including negotiation skills
- Relationship building and proposal writing
- Ability to independently estimate semi-routine and small- to mid-revenue projects on a reasonable schedule.
- Ability to interpret, explain, and transmit semi-complex project information.
- Sound decision-making with moderate influence on team outcomes and project direction.
Experience and Education
- 5 years of experience in construction industry project estimating preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting while preparing cost estimates, reviewing plans, and using computers/office software.
- Frequent hand and finger use for data entry, communication, and document preparation.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (e.g., plans, tools, project documents).
- Visual acuity for reviewing detailed blueprints, network designs, and estimating documentation.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb during site visits—including navigating construction zones, ladders, rooftops, or underground locations.
- Occasional exposure to weather, noise, and potentially hazardous site conditions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with clients, vendors, engineers, and internal teams.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and competing priorities.
- Occasional travel to job sites or client locations for assessments, meetings, or inspections.
