Position Overview: The Welding Engineer is responsible for developing, qualifying, and maintaining welding and fabrication procedures used in the production and repair of steel castings. Position Overview: The Welding Engineer is responsible for developing, qualifying, and maintaining welding and fabrication procedures used in the production and repair of steel castings. This role ensures all welding activities comply with Vulcan Metals’ quality standards, customer specifications, and applicable codes, while promoting a safe and efficient working environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop, qualify, and maintain welding procedures in accordance with applicable codes and specifications.
- Support casting repair, fabrication, and upgrade activities by providing technical guidance on weld design, filler metal selection, and heat input control.
- Maintain welder qualifications and oversee performance testing.
- Specify and manage welding consumables and inventory levels.
- Write procurement specifications for filler materials and fabrication components.
- Support process improvement and cost reduction initiatives related to welding and fabrication.
- Collaborate with Quality, Foundry, and Machining teams to ensure defect-free weld repairs and fabrication integrity.
- Assist with quoting and fabrication planning for new or modified work scopes.
- Lead or participate in fabrication kickoff meetings with welders, inspectors, and engineering staff.
- Participate in safety and 5S programs, ensuring compliance with all environmental, health, and safety policies.
- Provide training and mentoring to welders and technical staff.
- Recommend process improvements and participate in special projects to advance productivity, safety, and quality.
- In the absence of the Welding Engineer, the Senior Technical Manager will assume responsibilities.
- BS in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering required.
- 5 years of experience in steel casting, welding, or heat-treating environments.
- Strong understanding of ferrous alloy systems, weld metallurgy, and phase transformations.
- Working knowledge of ASME, AWS, and NAVSEA welding codes preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with ERP and laboratory systems (B&L, Odyssey, or equivalent) preferred.
- Strong technical and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Must have the ability to change between sitting, standing, and kneeling positions
- Must have the ability to twist, stoop, bend, and stand in the performance of job duties
- Must have the ability to lift and carry 40 pounds occasionally
- Must have the ability to stand and walk on concrete floors and uneven surfaces for the duration of the work shift
- Ability to work in both office and shop environments.
