Doula/Lactation Consultant

CLASSIFCATION SUMMARY:

Volunteers of America Southwest is seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Doula/Lactation Consultant to provide short-term support to new and expectant parents. This role focuses on offering emotional, physical, and educational assistance during the prenatal, birth, and postpartum periods, with a strong emphasis on breastfeeding guidance and lactation support. The ideal candidate will demonstrate cultural competency, respect for diverse family structures, and a commitment to equity and inclusion in all aspects of care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide prenatal education and emotional support to expectant parents.
• Assist during labor and delivery as a birth doula, offering comfort measures and advocacy.
• Deliver postpartum care, including breastfeeding guidance, troubleshooting lactation challenges, and promoting infant feeding best practices.
• Educate families on newborn care, maternal recovery, and available community resources.
• Maintain accurate documentation of services provided.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.
• Ensure culturally sensitive and equitable care for all families.

REQUIRED CREDENTIALS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

To be successful in this role, the Doula/Lactation Consultant should possess the following qualifications:

1. Certified Doula (DONA, CAPPA, or equivalent) and/or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC).
2. Minimum 1–2 years of experience supporting families in birth and lactation.
3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
4. Ability to work independently and adapt to diverse family needs.
5. CPR certification preferred.
6. Commitment to cultural competency and equity in care delivery.
7. Language: Bilingual skills (e.g., Spanish) are highly valued.
8. Other Requirements: Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings or early mornings.
