SUMMARY:

Resident Specialists will be the first staff at point of entry for our Detroit Veterans Housing Program. Resident Specialists will provide oversight, safety, guidance, and support to our residents, guests, volunteers, and staff located throughout the building. The primary objective of this role is to ensure that residents have a supportive, safe, and healthy experience during their time in our program. Resident Specialists will work directly with case managers, kitchen staff, facilities, and the program manager to ensure day-to-day operations and activity.  

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage and monitor clients and guests
  • ·   Provide safe and ethical care of residents according to policies and procedures
  • ·   Assist in coordinating client activities such as meal service, including late plates, check in and out
  • ·   Accept and provide documentation for all external donations
  • ·   Ensure all non-staff visitors, such as external volunteers, are greeted and follow the necessary procedures for check in and check out
  • ·   Ability to apply crisis management interventions situationally using de-escalation tactics
  • ·   Convey client concerns to appropriate personnel, including documentation in rounds reports and incident reports as needed
  • ·   Document incidents or occurrences following the Critical Incident Reporting Policy
  • ·    Establish a rapport with client population
  • ·    Perform hourly walk-through visual observations of all clients and facility to ensure their safety and well-being, documenting results
  • ·   Provide clients access to their medication box at request and during set times
  • ·   Provide clients with access to meals, including, serving food in line with VOAMI protocol and schedule, accessing late plates for clients, and monitoring snacks
  • ·   Administer life saving efforts, such as, calling 911, administering Narcan, and/or CPR, including use of AED as necessary
  • ·   Accurately monitor and log medication storage and usage
  • Secure and ensure safety of program facility and clients
  • ·   Ensure security of doors, windows, and gates of facility
  • ·   Conduct routine visual inspections of facility and population
  • ·   Circulate among clients, employees, and visitors to provide visibility and building safety.
  • ·   Report maintenance or facility problem areas in rounds report, or escalate based on situation to Operations Manager, Program Manager, and/or Vice President of Social Services
  • ·   Call police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons
  • ·   Be familiar with power, water and gas shutoffs, clean-out traps, fire extinguishers and fire systems
  • ·   Maintain immediate access to emergency numbers (e.g. Police, fire department, Program Manager, maintenance)
  • ·   Facilitate client evacuation of facility/safety in case of emergency
  • ·   Provide status updates to relieving Resident Specialist at shift change
  • ·   Complete rounds reports and end of shift reports, and as needed, incident reports
  • ·   Facilitate managing crises according to de-escalation and protection policies and procedures
  • ·   Participate in facility maintenance and cleanliness, including, emptying trash, cleaning workspace, sweeping and mopping floors as needed, etc.
  • ·   Participate in staff meetings
  • ·   Complete assigned online trainings as scheduled
  • ·   Work effectively with outside organization

      Additional Responsibilities

  • ·    Maintain compliance with VOA Michigan policies and procedures
  • ·    Ensure that all duties are carried out in a timely and orderly fashion so that VOA Michigan functions in the most efficient manner possible
  • ·    Other duties as assigned by supervisor

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLLS, AND ABILITIES

  • ·     Two (2) years of experience in direct client care or security required. Equivalent combination of education and experience and proven ability to relate effectively with similar populations will be considered
  • ·     General knowledge of crisis management interventions
  • ·     General knowledge of laws affecting and services available to service recipients
  • ·     Must have ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • ·     Must have proven ability to react professionally in emergency situations
  • ·     Availability to work a non-traditional schedule that includes holidays, evenings, and weekends
  • ·     Must have quality interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills
  • ·     Must have ability to document client activity verbally and in writing
  • ·     Experience with Microsoft Office
  • ·     Ability to enter information into a computerized database
  • ·     Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task
