Description
The Medical Compliance Assistant supports WMATA's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program by coordinating, executing, and documenting medical testing procedures in compliance with DOT, FTA, OSHA, and WMATA regulations. This role ensures the accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity of all testing processes while maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant medical environment.
Key responsibilities include maintaining the confidentiality of all records and medical information related to employees and applicants, coordinating the scheduling of required medical examinations, and ensuring the timely completion of compliance testing. The Medical Compliance Assistant performs machine calibration, administers quality assurance checks, and verifies that all testing equipment remains properly maintained and functioning according to regulatory standards.
This role prepares employees and applicants for various medical tests, completes all required forms, and administers breath alcohol tests using Evidential Breath Testing (EBT) devices. The Medical Compliance Assistant maintains Level D BAT certification, monitors calibration records, and conducts minor technical adjustments when required to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
Additional duties include ensuring examination rooms and collection areas are adequately stocked, sanitized, and compliant with OSHA safety and waste disposal standards. The Assistant collects and labels urine specimens, maintains strict chain-of-custody documentation, and upholds the integrity of specimen control throughout the testing process. The position also updates and manages all records for WMATA's alcohol and drug testing program, using automated systems to enter data, generate compliance reports, and maintain testing documentation.
The Medical Compliance Assistant provides educational materials on drug and alcohol abuse prevention, supports field-based collection services at multiple locations and shifts—including weekends and holidays—and may testify as a subject matter expert during arbitrations or legal proceedings related to testing procedures.
This position requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and a thorough understanding of testing protocols and compliance standards. The Medical Compliance Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining WMATA's commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and employee health integrity.
Requirements
- An Associate of Applied Science degree from a CAAHEP-accredited college program; or completion of (2) years of college or university work in allied health sciences from an accredited institution and/or an Associate Degree in Allied Health Sciences and a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a medical technician in a hospital/medical setting is required.
- Certified status at a minimal Level D BAT (Breath Alcohol Testing) certification is also required. Or an equivalent combination of post-high-school education in allied health science courses and a minimum of five years of experience as a medical technician in a hospital setting is required. Certified status at a minimal Level D BAT certification is also required
- Educated and trained to perform both administrative and clinical skills in the medical care environment. Employees in this class are responsible for conducting medically related procedures and tests for applicants and employees in connection with the Company's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program. They update and maintain test files, ensure the security of all specimens collected in accordance with HIPAA and DOT regulations, and maintain the confidentiality of test results. The employee can take action and exercise judgment within established WMATA and HIPAA guidelines.
