SUMMARY:
The Marketing Communications Specialist supports the development and execution of strategic communications that strengthen the VJS brand across digital, print, social media, public relations, and event platforms. This role is responsible for creating compelling content, supporting storytelling initiatives, coordinating social media activity, developing award submissions, assisting with public relations efforts, and managing communications and logistics related to tradeshows, career fairs, and company events. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, creative storyteller, highly-organized collaborator, and detail-oriented communications professional with a passion for engaging audiences and elevating brand presence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Content Development & Messaging
- Write, edit, and manage content for a variety of platforms including press releases, social media, blog posts, award submissions, presentations, and email campaigns. Collaborate with Marketing Director to create digital marketing plans for this content.
- Develop brand-aligned messaging frameworks to ensure consistency across all VJS content and communications.
- Collaborate with marketing team members to integrate strong copywriting into visual storytelling.
Social Media Strategy & Execution
- Manage and execute the VJS social media strategy across LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.
- Create, schedule, and analyze content performance regularly to optimize engagement and reach.
- Create storytelling campaigns (e.g., employee spotlights, project milestones, “day-in-the-life” features) to humanize the brand.
- Provide guidance, feedback, and also collaborate with other team members who assist with social media graphics, video and photography.
Awards & Recognition
- Lead the development, writing, and submission of award nominations.
- Research and maintain a comprehensive calendar of award deadlines.
- Partner with project teams to proactively identify award-worthy work.
Website & Digital Presence
- Write and maintain website copy in collaboration with the marketing team.
- Propose and implement content updates that improve SEO, user experience, and alignment with business objectives.
Events, Tradeshows & Career Fairs
- Develop and implement communication plans and recap reports for tradeshows
- Coordinate logistics including booth registration, shipping, setup, and on-site materials.
- Manage event collateral — signage, handouts, presentations, giveaways — ensuring all are brand-aligned and well-written.
- Collaborate with internal team members attending tradeshow to prepare talking points, cheat sheets, and follow-up materials.
- Maintain a master calendar of tradeshows/conferences and track registration deadlines and budgets.
- Attend select tradeshows to monitor competitor activity, capture emerging trends, and share insights that inform marketing strategies.
- Coordinate marketing aspects of career fairs.
- Coordinate client project groundbreakings, grand openings, and other milestone celebrations
Public Relations & Media Relations
- Collaborate with Marketing Director to identify and actively pitch newsworthy company stories to relevant trade and local media.
- Build and manage media contact lists
- Track media coverage and maintain a press archive.
- Utilize PR in digital marketing strategies.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
- 3 years of experience in marketing, communications, public relations, digital marketing, or related fields; A/E/C industry experience preferred.
- Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling abilities with experience creating content for multiple platforms and audiences.
- Strong understanding of brand messaging, content strategy, and digital communication best practices.
- Experience managing business social media platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, including content planning, scheduling, analytics, and engagement strategies.
- Familiarity with digital marketing tools and platforms including email marketing software, website content management systems, and social media management tools.
- Experience writing and coordinating award submissions, press releases, blog content, website copy, and promotional materials.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines, events, campaigns, and priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, leadership, project managers, and external partners.
- Experience coordinating tradeshows, career fairs, company events, or marketing-related initiatives preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or related creative software preferred.
- Understanding of SEO principles, website content strategy, and digital engagement metrics preferred.
- Detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and highly organized with strong follow-through skills.
- Ability to work both independently and within a collaborative team environment.
- Willingness to support a variety of marketing and communications initiatives that align with VJS corporate goals.
Work Environment: Professional office environment and on construction sites, which may have uneven surfaces, and uncontrolled environmental conditions such as wind, rain, ice, and snow. This position requires the employee to be in the office (not working remotely).
Travel required: The majority of this job is in a professional office environment. This position does require up to 5-10% local travel – not overnight.
Supervisory Responsibility: None.
Hours: 40 hours per week – 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Employee may be asked to work outside of standard operating hours to meet deadlines of our clients.
Physical Demands: Ability to sit, stand, walk, and hold equipment for extended periods of time.
