JOB SUMMARY

The Central Plant Boiler Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the central utility plant, including boilers, chillers, steam distribution systems, water treatment equipment, and associated mechanical systems. This position supervises boiler operators and plant personnel while ensuring compliance with safety regulations, environmental requirements, and organizational policies. The supervisor coordinates preventive maintenance activities, oversees plant operations, and ensures uninterrupted utility services to support facility operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct the daily activities of boiler operators and central plant staff.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, steam distribution systems, and related equipment.
  • Monitor plant performance and adjust operations to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Conduct routine inspections of plant equipment and systems.
  • Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities with maintenance personnel and contractors.
  • Monitor and maintain water treatment programs for boilers and cooling systems.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs, maintenance records, and regulatory documentation.
  • Investigate equipment failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, state, local, and organizational safety requirements.
  • Conduct safety meetings and provide ongoing training to plant personnel.
  • Assist with budget preparation, inventory control, and procurement of parts and supplies.
  • Respond to emergency situations involving utility systems and coordinate recovery efforts.
  • Participate in capital improvement projects, equipment upgrades, and energy conservation initiatives.
  • Collaborate with facility management to ensure uninterrupted utility services.
  • Monitor and maintain fuel oil systems and inventory
  • Support additional campus location with boilers such as ASC, BWC, Winkler, etc.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training in boiler operations, HVAC, industrial maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Associate degree in a technical discipline preferred.
  • Underground Storage tank Operator required. Must obtain within 3 months of hire date.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in central plant, boiler, or utility operations.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience operating high-pressure steam boilers and related utility equipment.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Boiler Operator License or Stationary Engineer License, if required by state or local regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • OSHA safety training and water treatment certifications preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of high-pressure steam systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, UST/Fuel delivery systems, and utility distribution systems.
  • Understanding of water treatment programs and energy management principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and building automation systems.
  • Ability to make sound decisions during emergencies and equipment failures.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work around heat, noise, steam, and rotating equipment.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.

Working Conditions

This position works in a central utility plant environment and may be exposed to high temperatures, mechanical equipment, chemicals used in water treatment, noisy environments, and varying weather conditions. The supervisor may be required to work weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations to support continuous plant operations.
