Job Title: Float - Direct Support Professional

Job Summary:

The Float - Direct Support Professional (“Float DSP’s) provide high quality care to individuals supported to provide them the best care, to assist them in being as independent as possible, to have relationships with friends and family, and to ensure their happiness with Vista Care’s services. The Float DSP will also assist individuals supported with daily living activities, as necessary and in accordance with their individual service plan (ISP), medical plan, behavioral support plan (BSP) and in accordance with Vista Care federal, state and local regulatory guidelines. Float DSP’s are expected to live and model Vista Care’s values at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Float DSP will be responsible for covering multiple programs in an assigned region to ensure appropriate coverage and the highest quality care for individuals supported; their role will incorporate routine travel across the assigned region or to a designated set of homes as assigned by VC Leadership.


  • Provides direct care for individuals with disabilities and provides the highest quality of care; Vista Care is synonymous with BEST CARE.

  • Responsible for assisting in the training of DSPs and quality delivery of care and support; supports DSP training as outlined on the On the Job Training checklist

  • Assist individuals supported in maintaining a safe and healthy lifestyle and monitor them for any changes in their health, behavior, appearance and/or patterns of activity; document and escalate these changes with leadership

  • Treat individuals supported with dignity and respect at all times; provide them opportunities to build relationships with families and friends

  • Act as an advocate for the individual supported and ensure that they are treated in accordance with all Vista Care policies and procedures at all times

  • Perform personal cares, including assisting with personal hygiene, assistance and appointments, medication administration and related tasks

  • Perform toileting, including providing and addressing bedpans, urinals and commode chairs as necessary; ensure individuals who are incontinent are changed immediately using appropriate care, and observe for any changes in condition; report any issues immediately to Vista Care leadership

  • Assisting individuals supported with any bathing/showering according to their individuals protocols; observe any signs of skin breakdown and follow any individual protocols if there are requirements for special soaps, lotions, shampoos or other products

  • Assist with meal preparation, including shopping for groceries, preparing and/or serving meals, assisting individuals eat (as necessary) and cleaning up ? Provide training and assistance to all individuals supported in making healthy dietary choice and adhering to any pre-established orders provided by healthcare professionals

  • Foster positive relationships with individuals supported, guardians, fellow staff and Vista Care leadership

  • Responsible for thorough and accurate documentation in all systems occur, including but not related to: health tracking, GERS/Incident Reports, T-Logs, personal hygiene, vitals and time tracking, overnight call circle, secure communications (Scomm), behavior data, safety data, fall data, seizure data, etc., medication administration records and the daily activity calendar

  • Performs light housekeeping, including, but not limited to: laundry, bed-making, and cleaning

  • Follow health management protocols, nurse delegated tasks, specialized individual instruction, medical or behavioral support plans, health and safety protocols and documentation requirements. Serves as a resource of the assigned programs, able to speak to individual needs, acting as a representative of individual needs/wants.

  • Ensure the safety of individuals supported, themselves and fellow staff members ? Transport individuals supported to scheduled appointments, activities, on errands, to any jobs that they may hold and for personal appointments; also accompany individuals supported as necessary

  • Reports vehicle maintenance needs and ensures that they are well-maintained and kept clean in accordance with all Vista Care policies and procedures

  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining a clean and safe environment for individuals supported and fellow staff

  • Escalate any issues or concerns with the cleanliness or condition of a program to VC leadership

  • Assist individuals supported with planning and participating in meaningful community, recreational activities, learning opportunities, household chores, physical fitness activities and money management

  • Ensure that wheelchairs, prosthetics, adaptive equipment and exercise supplies are kept clean and in good repair; escalate any issues to leadership

  • Notify leadership immediately of any health and/or safety concerns of the individuals supported.

  • Comply with all Vista Care policies, procedures and guidelines as well as all applicable laws

  • Attend and participate in any trainings and/or meetings as assigned by Vista Care leadership

  • Other duties as assigned by Vista Care leadership

Program responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Reports to work routinely and timely; if unable to report to work, or if there is a need to come to work late or leave early, follow Vista Care’s approval policy.

Complete required, on-going training requirements and competency levels within Vista Care and State/County required timeframes.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • At least eighteen (18) years of age


  • High School Diploma, GED, or the equivalent

  • Previous experience as a Direct Support Professional or Caregiver is preferred

  • Previous experience in residential or in-home services for individuals with disabilities

  • Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background check in accordance with all federal, state and local laws, Vista Care policies, and industry regulations

  • Excellent attendance is required in order to provide the highest quality of care to individuals supported

  • The Float DSP will be required to use their own vehicle and/or a vehicle provided by Vista Care to transport individuals supported; a valid driver’s license and personal liability policy at the limits established by Vista Care is required

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift at least fifty (50) pounds on a routine basis to assist with individuals supported


  • Ability to bend, twist, reach and assist individuals supported with their movements, including their ability to stand up

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must successfully complete all certification and training requirements within the assigned state(s) of operation within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and clear driving record in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and Vista Care’s best practices required if position requires transport of persons served in a company owned vehicle. Authorization must be provided to Vista Care to obtain a DMV record which can be approved for coverage by our company insurance carrier.
  • Experience in human services, customer service, or a related field preferred
  • Prior experience in residential services and supports for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Clear background check in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and Vista Care’s best practices
  • Consistently demonstrate effective decision-making abilities, strong communication skills, and computer literacy
  • Ability to read/write, comprehend in English language to facilitate documentation requirements and ability to comprehend Behavioral Support Plans/Individual support Plans. Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • A college, or university degree or the equivalent added bonus. Social services or similar fields preferred.
  • CPI or similar certification preferred

  • The possibility of exposure to blood borne pathogens exists if universal precautions are not followed.

  • Acts as an advocate for individuals supported and served, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Maintains professional boundaries at all times with individuals served, guardians, other team members, etc.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean, comfortable and supportive, working atmosphere ensuring a homelike environment.
  • Relate to those served with a caring and professional attitude and shows respect to them and other team members in every interaction.
  • Demonstrates positive communication in all interactions and initiates services. Treats individuals in an age appropriate manner with dignity and respect.
  • Works to involve individuals supporting in the decorating and care of their surroundings.
  • Ensures individuals supported are kept clean and neat in appearance, inclusive of assisting them in their choice of dressing, initiating the individual served to assure hygiene needs are met, ensuring all clothing is clean and in good condition with any needs reported to the supervisor.
