Position Description: Under the general guidance of the Director of Rehabilitation Services, provides diagnostic, therapeutic and remedial speech pathology services to patients of the agency, under the direction and written orders of a physician. The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) works within the scope of practice as defined by the NYS Education Department for speech language pathologists. The SLP practices his/her duties in a manner that is compliant with federal, state, and local codes, rules, regulations, and law.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates the degree of function and disability of patients unless contraindicated by his/her professional judgment or a doctor’s written order.
  • Performs speech language pathology treatment services upon the written order or referral of a licensed physician, in accordance with accepted professional standards and with methodology that stimulates improved oral-motor functioning, word retrieval, sentence formation and intelligibility, social-verbal interaction, laryngeal/pharyngeal functioning, and cognition, auditory comprehension, and swallowing.
  • Develops a treatment plan based on patient evaluation and physician orders, designed to restore, improve, or compensate communication efficiency and swallowing.
  • Records on patient charts all evaluations, re-evaluations, progress notes, consultations, and discharge summaries, within the time frames established by policy and procedure. Submits documentation on a weekly basis.
  • When the SLP is the case manager, performs the Comprehensive Assessment (OASIS) at the appropriate time points.
  • Assesses the need for the adjunct services, if not already involved, to achieve desired patient outcomes, e.g. PT, OT, MSW, aide, skilled nursing.
  • Participates with other personnel in the formation of the patient’s total plan of care, and confers with the rehabilitation team at least once a month or more frequently, as needed.
  • Consults with the physician on a regular basis regarding the therapy plan of care and patient progress.
  • Develops or assists in the development of speech language pathology policies and procedures.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as needed.

Other Responsibilities and Position Requirements:

  • Follows infection and exposure control protocols.
  • Meets with direct supervisor during scheduled times and attends required agency and departmental staff meetings.
  • Complies with agency policies and procedures.
  • Follows the Code of Conduct.
  • Possess visual/hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written/verbal communication.
  • Have the ability to deal effectively with stress both physically and mentally while performing reliably and dependably.
  • Promotes effective written/verbal communication.
  • Understands the principles, techniques and practices of speech pathology.
  • Understands the pathological conditions and socioeconomic factors affecting speech disabilities.
  • The ability to educate as evidenced by the patient’s and family’s increased knowledge of disease process and treatment, evaluated in supervisory visits and chart reviews.
  • Have the ability to perform independently.
  • Possess organizational skills, ability to pay attention to details and ability to problem-solve.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited program in speech language pathology.
  • Licensed and currently registered by the New York State Education Department as a Speech Language Pathologist.
  • At least two years of supervised clinical experience.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license; pass a motor vehicle and background check.

Pay: $80.00 per hour
