Position Overview

The Ophthalmic Technician I – Testing Technician is an entry-level clinical role responsible for performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing to support accurate evaluation and treatment planning by ophthalmologists and optometrists. This role focuses on operating specialized testing equipment, ensuring accurate documentation of results, and providing a positive patient experience throughout the testing process.

 

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to follow established testing protocols while working collaboratively within a fast-paced clinical environment. This position is ideal for individuals interested in learning ophthalmology and developing foundational clinical skills. No prior ophthalmic experience is required; on-the-job training is provided.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Communication

  • Relay appropriate clinical and non-clinical information between patients, physicians, and management in a timely and professional manner.


Diagnostic Testing

  • Perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing as ordered, including but not limited to:
    • Visual acuity testing
    • Visual field testing (Humphrey Visual Field)
    • Tonometry
    • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
    • Fundus photography
    • Corneal topography
    • A/B-scan ultrasound
    • Other ophthalmic testing as assigned
  • Ensure testing is completed accurately and in accordance with established clinical protocols.


Patient Interaction

  • Guide, instruct, and explain testing procedures to patients clearly to promote understanding, cooperation, and comfort.
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and patient-centered approach at all times.


Documentation & Record Management

  • Review patient accounts to identify required tests and procedures prior to testing.
  • Accurately record all test results and relevant findings in patient charts or the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of documentation to support provider review.


Workflow & Prioritization

  • Effectively manage daily assignments while maintaining clinic flow.
  • Navigate and complete assigned tasks, including voicemails, messages, prescription refill requests, faxes, and prior authorizations.
  • Assist with Light adjustable lens (LAL) treatment(S) patient set up


Equipment Maintenance & Safety

  • Clean, maintain, and calibrate ophthalmic instruments and testing equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and clinic standards.
  • Troubleshoot basic equipment issues and report concerns promptly.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, infection control, and hygiene standards.


Safety, Compliance & Professional Development

  • Adhere to all healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and clinic policies.
  • Stay current on ophthalmic testing technologies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and continuous learning opportunities to improve testing efficiency and patient outcomes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior ophthalmic or medical testing experience preferred but not required, training provided.
  • Ability to learn and operate ophthalmic diagnostic equipment accurately.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Excellent communication and patient service skills.
  • Ability to travel to satellite clinic locations as needed.
  • Availability to work Monday through Friday, with rotating Saturdays required.
