Responsibilities
- Greet patients warmly and assess their optical needs through active listening and professional consultation
- Assist customers in selecting eyewear frames and lenses that suit their style, prescription, and lifestyle preferences
- Educate patients on lens options, including coatings, tints, and specialty features such as polarized or photochromic lenses
- Take precise measurements for fitting glasses, including pupillary distance (PD) and frame adjustments
- Process optical orders accurately using electronic medical record (EMR) systems like Epic and manage medical records securely in compliance with HIPAA regulations
- Conduct basic vision assessments, including vital signs and visual acuity tests when required
- Collaborate with ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care, especially in pediatrics and senior care settings
- Maintain laboratory experience by assisting with lens edging, mounting, and quality control procedures
- Promote retail sales by providing excellent customer service, upselling appropriate products, and managing retail math to meet sales goals
- Uphold aseptic techniques during any laboratory procedures to ensure patient safety and product integrity
Qualifications
- Proven experience as an optician or in optical sales with a strong understanding of ophthalmology concepts
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the eye to effectively communicate options to patients
- Familiarity with medical terminology, medical coding, and medical billing processes relevant to eye care services
- Experience working with EMR systems such as Epic or similar platforms for medical records management
- Basic understanding of HIPAA regulations to protect patient privacy at all times
- Laboratory experience with lens fabrication or edging is highly desirable
- Strong retail sales skills complemented by retail management knowledge and retail math proficiency
- Ability to work effectively in clinic environments that serve pediatrics or senior care populations
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex medical information clearly and compassionately
