The Opportunity
Position: Head of Sales (Chief Commercial Officer-level role)
Location: Indianapolis, IN (with potential national oversight)
Reporting Relationship: Ownership Team (Phil Alt & Todd Gates)
The Head of Sales at Vision Painting is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all revenue-generating functions and driving the company’s growth strategy. This role combines responsibilities traditionally associated with a Chief Commercial Officer — creating a strategic, scalable, and cross-functional approach to sales, marketing, and client engagement.
Reporting directly to the ownership team, this executive will shape Vision’s go-to-market strategy, strengthen its industry presence, and build long-term relationships with clients across all divisions. As Vision expands nationally, this role will be instrumental in identifying and capitalizing on new business opportunities, optimizing sales operations, and building a high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Sales Leadership
- Develop and execute a comprehensive sales and business development strategy aligned with Vision’s growth objectives — locally and nationally.
- Set aggressive but achievable revenue targets and KPIs across all divisions (Painting, Specialties Group, and Residential).
- Build and lead a high-performing sales organization; recruit, train, and mentor top talent.
- Forecast, track, and report on revenue performance, pipeline health, and competitive positioning.
Business Development & Client Management
- Lead direct engagement with key clients — including general contractors, developers, property managers, and large industrial clients.
- Establish and manage account plans for large and strategic customers.
- Identify new verticals and market segments for expansion, both regionally and nationally.
- Represent Vision Painting at industry events, conferences, and executive meetings.
Commercial Operations
- Collaborate closely with estimating, operations, and project delivery teams to ensure alignment on scope, pricing, and execution.
- Lead development of pricing strategy, sales incentives, and sales compensation plans.
- Leverage CRM systems to ensure visibility into the sales funnel and improve conversion rates.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work directly with company ownership to align commercial goals with operational execution.
- Support marketing strategy to enhance brand awareness, content creation, and lead generation.
- Champion a client-centric culture by coordinating with project managers and field leaders to ensure exceptional customer experience.
Market Intelligence & Growth Planning
- Monitor industry trends, market shifts, and competitive activity to adjust strategy and identify risks/opportunities.
- Oversee the development and qualification of new sales leads and proposals.
- Create and maintain strong relationships with partners, vendors, and potential acquisition targets that support Vision’s expansion goals.
Year One Success Factors
- Launch and scale a new go-to-market strategy that supports growth in existing markets and entry into at least one new geography.
- Establish a robust sales operating rhythm, including pipeline forecasting, win/loss reviews, and KPI tracking.
- Deliver measurable revenue growth across all three divisions.
- Build a cohesive sales team culture with clear accountability, coaching, and shared success metrics.
- Elevate Vision Painting’s presence with developers, GCs, and property owners in new market sectors.
Experience and Professional Qualifications
- 10–15 years of progressive leadership experience in sales, business development, or commercial operations.
- Demonstrated ability to grow revenue across multiple service lines, geographies, or business units.
- Proven experience managing complex B2B sales cycles and key accounts in construction, trades, or related industries.
- Strong command of CRM tools, data analytics, and performance management systems.
- Experience with strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational development.
- Entrepreneurial self-starter with a proven ability to build structure in ambiguity, drive growth independently, and maintain a strong sense of urgency and ownership.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
Preferred Industry Background
- Commercial construction, painting/drywall, specialty trades, infrastructure, or facility services.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Construction Management, or a related field. MBA or equivalent experience preferred.
