Licensed Technical Architect

Vision Builders
Sioux Center, IA Full Time
POSTED ON 9/2/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/31/2026

Role Overview

The Licensed Technical Architect partners closely with the design team to translate design intent into technically sound, constructible, and code-compliant buildings. This role provides the licensed architectural expertise and professional oversight needed to support projects from design through construction.

This position is focused on technical architecture and professional review rather than conceptual design or day-to-day drawing production. The Licensed Technical Architect will work collaboratively with designers, project managers, field operations, and engineering consultants to review architectural work, identify technical and compliance risks, and help ensure projects are appropriately coordinated and ready for construction.

The ideal candidate is an experienced licensed architect who enjoys the technical and professional side of architecture, understanding how buildings are assembled, reviewing and solving complex architectural issues, and helping others successfully translate design intent into built work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Professional Architectural Review: Review architectural documents for technical completeness, code compliance, constructability, and coordination, and provide the professional oversight required of a licensed architect.
  • Architectural Licensure & Responsible Charge: Maintain appropriate responsible charge of architectural work and sign and seal architectural documents when appropriate and in accordance with applicable state licensing requirements and professional standards.
  • Design Partnership: Collaborate closely with the design team to translate design intent into technically sound, code-compliant, and constructible solutions without serving as the primary conceptual designer.
  • BIM & Documentation: Utilize Autodesk Revit to develop, review, modify, and coordinate architectural models and construction documents while maintaining design intent, technical accuracy, and project standards.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide architectural guidance related to building systems, assemblies, detailing, building envelopes, accessibility, life safety, structural interfaces, and other technical considerations.
  • Engineering Coordination: Collaborate with structural, civil, MEP, and specialty engineers to resolve coordination issues and appropriately integrate engineered systems into the project.
  • Mentorship & Development: Provide technical mentorship and professional guidance to architectural design staff, including supporting team members working toward architectural licensure.
  • Quality & Risk Management: Identify incomplete details, coordination gaps, code concerns, constructability issues, and other architectural risks before they affect permitting or construction.
  • Project & Field Support: Serve as a senior architectural resource for permitting, RFIs, submittals, unforeseen field conditions, and other issues requiring professional architectural judgment.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support project, team, and organizational needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture or education meeting applicable architectural licensing requirements.
  • Active architectural license in Iowa, or an active architectural license in another U.S. jurisdiction with the ability to obtain Iowa licensure by reciprocity.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain additional state licenses as required by the company's project portfolio.
  • 5 years of relevant professional architecture experience.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial architecture, construction documents, building systems, architectural detailing, and construction methods.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable building codes, life-safety and accessibility requirements, and permitting processes.
  • Experience reviewing architectural work for technical quality, compliance, coordination, and constructability.
  • Experience coordinating with structural, civil, MEP, and specialty engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers and other architectural team members.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, BIM coordination platforms, or similar industry tools is required.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in a design-build or contractor-led project environment.
  • Commercial, industrial, healthcare, manufacturing, multifamily, or other technically complex project experience.
  • Experience mentoring architectural staff through professional development or the licensure process.
  • Multi-state architectural licensure or experience obtaining reciprocal licensure.

What We're Looking For

This role is best suited for an accomplished architect who enjoys architecture but does not need to be the person driving the design vision. You are energized by technical problem-solving, professional review, mentoring others, and helping ensure that good design becomes compliant, coordinated, and successful built work.

This is not primarily a conceptual design or production drafting position. Your greatest contribution will be your architectural experience, technical judgment, professional licensure, mentorship, and ability to provide the architectural oversight necessary to move projects forward with confidence.
