About the Role
As part of the Virgo Health scientific team, the Scientific Intern will support the development of high-quality medical education and communications materials for pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device clients. This position is designed for recent PhD or PharmD graduates looking to transition their advanced scientific training into a career in medical communications. The intern will gain hands-on experience across a range of therapeutic areas, content formats, and client engagements, building foundational skills in scientific writing, project execution, and client service within an agency environment.
6 month internship. June-December.
Responsibilities
Scientific Writing Support
- Assist senior scientific staff in developing medical education and communications materials, including slide decks, newsletters, digital content, and print pieces
- Draft and edit scientific content under supervision, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and alignment with client objectives
- Conduct literature searches and synthesize published data to support content development
- Translate complex scientific and clinical data into clear, audience-appropriate language for healthcare professionals and other stakeholders
- Support the development of new business proposals by contributing background research and preliminary content
Client Activity
- Attend and observe client calls and meetings to develop an understanding of client communication and project management
- Accurately interpret and incorporate client and author feedback on scientific materials
- Assist with on-site support activities such as data gathering, note-taking, and key opinion leader (KOL) meeting preparation
- Learn to manage assigned tasks within established timelines and budgets
Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with scientific staff, account executives, and the creative and editorial teams to move projects through the development process
- Communicate proactively with team members about workload, progress, and any issues that could affect deliverables
- Participate in internal training sessions, team meetings, and professional development activities
Industry Knowledge
- Develop a working understanding of the pharmaceutical and healthcare communications industry, including the role of medical education agencies
- Build foundational knowledge of therapeutic areas relevant to assigned accounts, including disease pathophysiology, treatment landscapes, and product data
- Familiarize yourself with relevant regulatory codes, compliance guidelines, and general FDA best practices around promotional medical material
- Stay current on trends and developments in the medical communications field
Other
- Accurately input hours worked into timesheets
- Complete a capstone project or presentation summarizing key learnings and contributions during the internship
Qualifications
- Completed PhD or PharmD degree in a life sciences, biomedical, pharmaceutical, or related discipline (completed within the past 12 months or anticipated completion before the internship start date)
- No prior agency experience required; candidates with relevant academic research, fellowships, or industry internship experience are encouraged to apply
