Job Title: Training Manager – Field Service
Locations: Roanoke, VA

Position Summary
Virginia Transformer Corp. is seeking an experienced and hands-on Training Manager – Field Service to lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of training programs that support our Field Service and Technical Support teams across North America. This role will ensure technicians, commissioning specialists, and customer-facing technical staff are equipped with the knowledge, safety discipline, and customer-service skills required to support mission-critical power infrastructure.
The Training Manager will partner closely with Field Service Leadership, Engineering, Safety, and Sales to build scalable, practical training programs that directly improve technical performance, customer satisfaction, and operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Field Service Training Program Development
- Design and manage comprehensive technical training programs for installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of transformer and power equipment.
- Develop structured curricula covering electrical fundamentals, diagnostics, field safety, customer interaction, and documentation standards.
- Create blended learning paths including classroom, virtual, and hands-on lab / field simulations.
- Ensure all programs align with company standards, OEM guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
2. Needs Assessment & Technical Skill Gap Analysis
- Conduct regular assessments of technician skill levels, certification needs, and performance gaps.
- Collaborate with Field Service Managers and Regional Leaders to align training with deployment demands and emerging technologies.
- Use performance data, service reports, and customer feedback to continuously refine programs.
3. Delivery & Facilitation
- Lead in-person and virtual technical training sessions, workshops, and field demonstrations.
- Develop train-the-trainer programs to scale knowledge across regions.
- Coordinate external instructors, certification bodies, and technical vendors as needed.
4. Safety, Compliance & Certification
- Ensure all technicians complete required electrical safety, OSHA, lockout/tagout, confined space, arc-flash, and PPE training.
- Maintain accurate certification and compliance records.
- Partner with EHS and HR to integrate safety culture into all training initiatives.
5. Field Performance & Customer Impact
- Support the development of customer-facing skills including communication, documentation, and professionalism in mission-critical environments such as utilities and data centers.
- Build escalation and troubleshooting playbooks to reduce downtime and improve first-time fix rates.
- Align training outcomes with service KPIs such as response time, quality scores, and repeat visit reduction.
6. Metrics, Systems & Reporting
- Utilize Learning Management Systems (LMS) and tracking tools to manage participation, certifications, and program effectiveness.
- Develop KPIs measuring technician readiness, safety compliance, customer satisfaction, and training ROI.
- Provide regular performance reports and recommendations to Field Service and Executive Leadership.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Engineering Technology, Business, HR, or related field preferred. Equivalent technical or field experience will be considered.
Experience
- 5 years in technical training, field service leadership, or industrial training management, ideally within electrical, power systems, heavy manufacturing, or industrial equipment environments.
- Demonstrated experience training technicians in safety, diagnostics, or commissioning.
- Experience supporting multi-site or regional field teams is highly desirable.
Technical & Professional Skills
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, industrial safety standards, and technical troubleshooting methodologies.
- Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and virtual training platforms.
- Excellent facilitation, communication, and curriculum development skills.
- Strong organizational and project management capability with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously.
- Data-driven mindset with the ability to translate training metrics into actionable improvements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in transformer, switchgear, generator, or critical power environments.
- Certifications such as CPTD, ATD, OSHA Trainer, or electrical safety credentials.
- Prior field service or commissioning background.
Working Environment & Travel
- Primarily on-site at one of the listed locations with regular travel to field sites, training facilities, and regional service hubs.
- Exposure to industrial environments, job sites, and energized equipment (with appropriate safety protocols).
