Job Title: Cost Accountant / Financial Analyst – Capital Projects (Hybrid)
Department: Construction and Expansion PMO
Reports To: AVP of Construction and Expansion
FLSA Status: Exempt
Location: Roanoke, Virginia (Hybrid)
Position Summary
The Cost Accountant / Financial Analyst – Capital Projects supports the Capital Project Management Office by providing precise financial analysis, cost control, and reporting for major capital initiatives, including new facilities, expansions, and infrastructure upgrades. This hybrid role integrates accounting discipline with project insight—ensuring accurate cost tracking, adherence to budgets, and strategic visibility into capital investments.
The position works cross-functionally with Engineering, Procurement, and Project Management to ensure each project’s financial performance aligns with company goals, timelines, and governance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Capital Project Financial Management
- Develop and maintain detailed cost tracking models for all capital expenditures (CAPEX), including budgets, commitments, forecasts, and actuals.
- Review and validate purchase orders, change orders, and invoices for proper coding and compliance with project funding.
- Partner with Project Managers to prepare and update project financial forecasts and identify cost variances.
- Prepare monthly capital project financial summaries for senior leadership, including variance analysis and cash flow projections.
- Support business case development, cost-benefit analysis, and return-on-investment (ROI) evaluations.
- Ensure accurate project closeout, fixed asset capitalization, and depreciation setup in accordance with company policy.
Cost Accounting & Analysis
- Maintain accurate cost structures and allocation methods for capital and indirect costs.
- Reconcile project costs to general ledger and fixed asset systems.
- Monitor spending patterns and identify cost-saving opportunities or process inefficiencies.
- Support plant and regional cost accounting initiatives that align with broader manufacturing finance objectives.
Financial Planning & Reporting
- Assist in preparing annual and long-term capital budgets.
- Consolidate project-level forecasts into organizational reports for Finance and Operations.
- Provide ad hoc analysis, scenario modeling, and variance reviews for capital investments.
- Participate in month-end close processes related to capital projects (accruals, journal entries, reconciliations).
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company capitalization policies, and internal control requirements.
- Support internal and external audits by providing capital project financial documentation.
- Recommend and implement process improvements for project accounting and reporting workflows.
Tools & Systems
Proficiency or hands-on experience with:
- ERP Systems: SAP, Oracle, or NetSuite (Project Systems / Project Accounting modules).
- Project Controls Software: Oracle Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or Procore.
- Financial Planning & Analysis Tools: Power BI, Tableau, Adaptive Insights, or Anaplan.
- Cost Management Applications: EcoSys, ARES Prism, or Deltek Cobra (preferred).
- Advanced Excel Skills: Pivot tables, financial modeling, and scenario analysis.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred.
- 4–8 years of experience in cost accounting, project accounting, or financial analysis.
- Experience within manufacturing, construction, or industrial capital project environments highly desirable.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Knowledge of capital project accounting, cost controls, and capitalization principles.
- Effective communication and collaboration with project, engineering, and finance teams.
- Demonstrated ability to streamline data and communicate insights to leadership.
- Comfortable working in a hybrid office/project site environment.
