Training & Outreach Safety Specialist (Hybrid)
Starting Salary Range: $60,278- $65,000
The State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeks a Training & Outreach Safety Specialist to join the Division of Utility and Railroad Safety (URS), which administers safety programs involving underground utility damage prevention, jurisdictional natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline facilities, and railroads. This full-time position requires early mornings, evenings, and weekends, as well as frequent day and occasional overnight travel. The SCC offers a flexible hybrid work schedule (when not traveling for outreach), on-the-job training, and professional development opportunities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Senior Safety Specialist and Deputy Director to administer Virginia’s Operation Lifesaver rail safety program
- Attend in-person outreach events and provide safety related educational presentations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Engage with the community to promote and expand safety presentation sessions
- Schedule and conduct damage prevention training with the goal of educating attendees about the Virginia Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act
- Prepare, review, and edit educational materials
- Assist with maintaining outreach inventory
- Document training information into our system and create training memos
- Perform related work as required
Required Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license
- Sufficient driving record for operating a state vehicle
- Willingness to complete frequent day trips and occasional overnight travel to conduct training and outreach programs, both in classroom settings and in the field
- Ability to lift and carry outreach displays and materials between 25-50 pounds
- Ability to maintain effective, professional working relationships with SCC staff, industry personnel, and the general public
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exceptional presentation skills
- Detail-oriented and highly organized
- Ability to prepare training materials
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 or more years of related professional experience in teaching or providing training to adults, and/or experience working with outreach programs
- In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, approximately 6 years of related experience
- Knowledge of learning styles and cultural norms
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Proficiency with design programs for editing educational materials such as Canva, Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.
- Knowledge of utility damage prevention and railroad safety is a plus
- Bilingual in Spanish/English is a plus
