A Safety Engineer is primarily responsible for providing general OSHA/FMCSA/Regulatory Safety Support, to various field, plant and office locations. This position is entry level, and reports to Business Unit Safety Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide safety support for all Construction / Asphalt projects.
  • Conduct routine, documented safety inspections of assigned projects and sites, for compliance with Company, local, state, and federal regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Assist in developing Safety Training programs/content.
  • Under the direction of the Safety Manager, conduct various Safety Training, such as Fall Protection, Confined Space, 1st Aid/CPR, Rigging/Signaling and other various compliance workshops.
  • Assist project teams with procuring needed Safety Equipment, such as Safety Glasses, Hardhats, Vests and other needed PPE from third party vendors.
  • Assist Management in Root Cause Investigation of accidents, injuries and/or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures.
  • Work with Operations, to develop job hazard analysis, for various construction and asphalt operations.
  • Serve as point of contact for confined space entries; review applicable policies and procedures with entrants.
  • Serve as point of contact, for operations, in the event medical treatment may be needed.
  • Monitor and audit compliance with DOT regulations, including reviewing:
    • Hour of Service Logs
    • Vehicle Inspections/Maintenance
  • Foster and build knowledge of state and federal regulatory activity (DOT, OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Monitor and audit field-level compliance with Substance Abuse Program.
  • Perform other reasonable tasks that may be requested by the Company.

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

  • Must possess written and verbal communication skills.
  • General computer knowledge, including Microsoft word and excel.
  • Valid Driver's License and driving record, in accordance with company approved driver criteria
  • Working field knowledge including Heavy Highway and Bridge Construction, Workzone Traffic Safety, Crane Operations, Asphalt Plant and Lay down Activities.

Education and Experience The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Safety Engineer, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • A 2-year degree in Safety Management, or related experience is required.

  • Routinely work a shift of 8 hours/per day, including occasional nights and/or weekends.
  • Frequently utilize stairs and/or ladders, using 3 points of contact, to access various working/walking platforms.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull, periodically up to 25 pounds.
  • Periodically work at heights, greater than 6', utilizing provided fall protection equipment/personal protective equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Potential limited exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise; ability to wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hardhat, fall protection and/or respirator, where applicable.
  • Periodically walk and/or stand, for short periods of time, on various terrain, including sand, gravel, pavement and dirt.
  • Must be able to communicate and understand both orally and written/typed.

Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Safety Engineer encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Work environment may periodically expose individual to various levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a plant; either engineering controls and/or personal protective equipment is required, to ensure exposure limit does not exceed OSHA specifications.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve exposure to a variety of substances commonly found on asphalt and plant sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline and diesel fuel; however, no levels above OSHA Permissible exposure limit.
