Job Duties
The Office of the State Inspector General (OSIG) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Corrections Ombudsman within its Administration Division. The purpose of the position is to coordinate with other states and agencies to determine best practices and establish functional operating procedures in order to ensure the unit meets the tasks set forth by legislation. This position will conduct inspections; monitor conditions; establish the Inmate and Family Support Services Line to receive complaints/inquiries and determine if investigation is warranted; provide information; provide technical assistance; review the administrative remedy process of DOC; develop a strategic plan; and coordinate reporting as required by the Code of Virginia.
Minimum Qualifications
Training or experience in criminal law, including any experience with local or state correctional law. Comprehensive experience organizing, leading and reporting on multiple large projects or initiatives simultaneously; Working knowledge of state criminal justice statutes and state regulations; Demonstrated ability executing and monitoring strategic plans and facilitating new initiatives; Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with inmates, family members, advocacy groups, agency leaders, legislators and their staff, and the Governor’s executive staff and cabinet members and Experience supervising staff. High School Graduate or equivalent.
Additional Considerations
Considerable experience in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Law, Social Services or related field. Mediation or arbitration skills/experience.
