General Statement of Duties


The MANAGER, People and Culture is responsible for a people-centric workplace approach to team member management. The Manager coordinates all aspects of HR including but not limited to talent acquisition and retention, team member relations, training and development, professional development and performance management, and development of Museum policies, systems, and procedures. The Manager is responsible for building a culture that promotes growth, productivity, change, and inclusion. This position recognizes the capacity to achieve greater results by leveraging volunteers’ diverse knowledge and abilities in every Museum department. The Manager, People and Culture reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field
  • 2 - 5 years in human resources, volunteer management or comparable experience
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills 
  • The business acumen to drive positive outcomes for the organization
  • Understanding of best practices and experience in building inclusive and engaged workplaces 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to partner effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including expectation setting
  • Ability to deal with conflict effectively, and to manage difficult situations confidently and calmly; demonstrated ability to coach and counsel managers and staff
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision; self-starter; excellent organizational ability/attention to detail; detail-oriented
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize, think quickly and make ethical decisions
  • Experience managing challenging situations, including directing others
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in dealing with personal and delicate issues
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, Canvas Instructure, and volunteer tracking systems such as Volgistics
  • CPR and First Aid certified or willing to become at museum expense

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be a positive, enthusiastic representative of the Virginia Living Museum
  • As an HR Business Partner, serve as a strategic liaison between People and Culture and Leadership Team, collaborating on Museum-wide people and culture strategy
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive people and culture strategy that aligns with the Museum’s overall mission and goals
  • Oversee people and culture functions, including talent acquisition, team member relations, performance management, training and development
  • Coordinate recruiting and selection efforts for all museum positions; conduct organizational and departmental staffing analyses; create and revise job descriptions; guide department heads in the recruiting process; conduct new hire onboarding including orientation and benefit set up; conduct exit interviews
  • Responsible for developing and implementing change management strategies that maximize employee engagement during organizational transformations
  • Shape and promote a positive, inclusive, and engaging company culture that reflects Museum values
  • Develop and implement initiatives to enhance team member engagement, retention, growth, and advancement 
  • Identify and coordinate ongoing training for team members, including collaborating with Leadership to design and implement management training program for supervisory staff
  • In collaboration with Leadership, spearhead and uphold DEAI strategic missions. Integrate diversity, equity, access and inclusion practices and principles in all aspects of Human Resources strategies, practices, and processes at every stage of the team member lifecycle 
  • Ensures and enforces adoption of policies that improve team member experience, performance, and work culture
  • Manage team member relations issues and provide guidance to managers
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that promote a safe and respectful work environment
  • Maintains museum policy manuals, forms, organizational charts, and employee directory
  • Special Committees and other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly
  • Physical requirements include medium work, exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Must be able stand for extended periods of time and move about on foot to accomplish tasks
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, and utilize repetitive motions.
  • Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer, and extensive reading
