General Statement of Duties

The Grants Officer is responsible for raising financial support from granting agencies and foundations for the Museum’s operations and programs. As a key member of the Museum’s Advancement team, the Grants Officer works closely with museum administration, staff, and volunteers to secure support for the Museum. This position recognizes the capacity to achieve greater results by integrating skilled volunteers and leveraging their diverse knowledge and abilities. The Grants Officer reports to the Advancement Director.

Qualifications

• A clear understanding of the role of philanthropy in the mission of the Museum.
• Be a positive and enthusiastic representative of the Virginia Living Museum.
• Thorough understanding of grant programs. 
• Demonstrated success in grant funding.
• Minimum 4 years of grant writing or fundraising experience, Bachelor’s degree required.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills.
• Strong analytical and research skills with an eye for detail.
• Results-oriented and goal-driven.
• Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Database software experience desirable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential Function 1: Grant research and writing

• Solicit funding from foundations and other granting agencies to meet and exceed Museum goals.
• Research funding sources, growing opportunities to meet operating goals.
• Write grants for funding opportunities. 
• Manage and prepare required materials for granting sources.
• Manage annual grant calendar of grant proposals and report deadlines.
• Compile and track programmatic and fiscal data to report outcomes and impact.

Essential Function 2: Stewardship, Cultivation and External Engagement

• Manage and create impactful reports to grantors.
• Coordinate internal staff teams for successful grant fulfillment.
• Develop and strengthen donor relationships.
• Support all Advancement cultivation activities and events.
• Collaborate to develop effective donor communications. 
• Leverage volunteer support by utilizing interns to research grant opportunities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends.
• Must be able to hear and speak clearly to communicate effectively with employees.
• Physical requirements include medium work, exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally,      and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Must be able stand for extended periods of time and move about on foot to accomplish tasks.
• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, and utilize      repetitive motions.
• Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data,      transcribing, viewing a computer, and extensive reading.
