What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Technician position at Virginia League for Planned Parenthood?
The Laboratory Technician supports the daily operations of the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood’s (VLPP) High Complexity Laboratory. Working under the direction of the Lab Manager, this role contributes to the efficient, compliant, and high-quality functioning of laboratory services.
This position performs molecular testing, manages specimen processing, maintains equipment and supplies and ensures strict adherence to all regulatory, safety and quality standards. This position plays an essential role in providing accurate, timely laboratory results that support superior patient care.
Candidates must have a minimum 1–2 years of clinical laboratory experience, preferably in molecular diagnostic testing. Experience working in a CLIA-regulated environment is strongly preferred.
- Perform specimen collection, accessioning, preparation, and processing in accordance with established protocols.
- Conduct molecular diagnostic testing for infectious diseases, including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and analysis.
- Assist in verifying and reporting accurate laboratory test results as directed by the Lab Manager and Lab Director.
- Maintain strict compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, HIPAA, state regulations and VLPP policies.
- Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality assurance (QA) processes and quality control (QC) protocols.
- Participate in internal audits, proficiency testing and quality improvement initiatives.
- Document all testing activities, maintenance logs, QC results and incident reports accurately and timely.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organized laboratory environment.
- Immediately report equipment malfunctions, test irregularities or safety concerns to the Lab Manager
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including calibration and routine troubleshooting.
- Assist with monitoring inventory and ensuring adequate supplies for molecular testing and daily operations.
- Support the Lab Manager in ensuring workflow efficiency and timely turnaround of laboratory results.
