What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - Gastroenterology position at Virginia Gastroenterology Institute?
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for providing professional medical care for endoscopy and/or clinic patients following established standards and practices.
- Assist physicians/providers in coordinating patient care, clerical, environmental and organizational tasks.
- Function as primary liaison between patients and physicians.
- Responsible for chart management and appointment scheduling as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Documents all activities/ interventions, patient/family responses, medication dispensed/prescribed, etc. in the medical record.
- Maintains exam rooms.
- Provides direct patient care by talking vitals, patient history, referrals, and patient phone messages as directed by the provider and/or supervisor.
- Chart Preparation
- Monitors and documents patient status.
- Maintains/reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results.
- Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls.
- Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines, and confidentiality policies.
- Adheres to Virginia Gastroenterology’s policies and compliance manual.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Certification in Medical Assisting preferred (experience may be substituted for education).
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year professional medical assisting experience, clinic experience preferred, and gastroenterology experience a plus. Experience with Athena Health EMR desirable.
REQUIREMENTS: Current BLS certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE:
1. Knowledge of professional medical assisting theory, regulations and practices to give and evaluate patient care.
2. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment.
3. Knowledge of basic nursing principles and protocols.
4. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality.
5. Knowledge of medical chart reporting/records.
