The Mount Rogers Health District (MRHD) is seeking a dedicated Public Health Outreach Worker Senior–Interpreter to support our growing number of Spanish-speaking clients and ensure they receive equitable access to essential public health services.

In this vital role, you will facilitate communication between clients and staff by providing high-quality interpretation and translation services across a variety of clinical and outreach settings, including Family Planning, Immunizations, STI testing and treatment, Car Seat Safety, and WIC. You will obtain patient histories, deliver basic health education, explain routine assessments and treatment processes, and help clients connect with social, financial, and community resources. This position also supports home-visiting programs, working alongside public health nurses and resource mothers to provide Baby Care and Resource Mother services to high risk prenatal clients, infants up to age two, and pregnant or parenting teens.

The Public Health Outreach Worker Senior–Interpreter also contributes to district-wide operations by managing the Spanish-language phone line, coordinating interpreter schedules, and mentoring interpreter staff. Additional responsibilities include providing certified car seat safety training, supporting programs such as TB, Early Intervention, and Health Equity initiatives, and promoting cultural awareness among VDH staff. Minimum Qualifications

  • Bilingual English/Spanish (verbal and written); ability to work with ethnically diverse populations and at-risk families with multiple health needs; must be positive, exercising good and independent judgment in dealing with children and adults; ability to operate basic office equipment; ability to translate medical information correctly into vocabulary that the family can understand; remain within role boundaries, be accepting and non-judgmental in working with families
  • Must be able to provide own transportation
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Car Seat certification
  • TITLE X (Family planning) training is required annually
  • Skill in interviewing, counseling, teaching and using audio-visual equipment is required
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing


Additional Considerations

  • Specific training in providing interpreter and translation services preferred
  • Experience working with case management, translation, outreach worker preferred
