Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts. The Richmond & Henrico County Health Districts (RHHD) are on the forefront of Public Health and Population Health. Our mission is to protect health, champion equity, and partner to address local needs. We accomplish this by exposing and addressing the root causes of health disparities and protecting health through disease prevention and monitoring, providing clinical services, nutrition services, environmental health services, vital records, emergency planning, and building health equity by partnering with communities and working collaboratively across sectors. The Language Interpreter provides foreign language interpretation services within assigned district/local health department and may support a variety of agency staff across multiple program areas, such as clinical services at the LHD, on-site visits for permitting and inspections, in-home visitation programs, community health outreach events, etc.

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide accurate, impartial, and culturally sensitive interpretation services to ensure that individuals with limited English proficiency or non-English speaking individuals have appropriate access to program services and that service delivery is maximized. May provide translation services for documents and materials. Must be able to complete VDH Interpreter Training within 30 days after hire.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Fluency in English and foreign language (Spanish)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English and foreign language (Spanish)
  • Ability to provide accurate, complete, and culturally sensitive interpretation services in a confidential manner
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, such a medical and non-medical staff, patients, clients, and community members
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Experience and proficiency with the use of computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)

Additional Considerations

  • Successful completion of formal interpreter training from any recognized institution with a minimum of 40 hours
  • Knowledge and understanding of community health problems
  • Familiarity with interpretation equipment and software, especially when remote or when telephone interpretation is needed
