Job Description

This is a readvertisement; previous applicants need not re-apply. The purpose of this position is to support the Division of Land Protection and Revitalization in the areas of risk assessment and quality assurance planning and reporting. Provides human health and ecological risk assessment support for the Division of Land Protection and Revitalization. Reviews environmental risk assessments in accordance with CERCLA, RCRA, and Voluntary Remediation Program regulations, and coordinates updates to the Virginia Unified Risk Assessment Model and Land Division Quality Management Plan. This is a restricted position. Continued employment is contingent on the availability of grant or non-general funds. Please note this position follows a hybrid work schedule to include both in-office and telework. Candidates must be able to work from the assigned work location in Virginia.

Responsibilities

This position is primarily responsible for:

  • Assessing risk, quality assurance planning and reporting for the Virginia Unified Risk Assessment Model (VURAM)
  • Providing human health and ecological risk assessment support to staff within the Land Programs
  • Coordinating the Land Division's Quality Management System and assisting in maintaining VURAM.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of toxicology, environmental science principles, chemistry, statistics, quality assurance/quality control, site assessment and characterization principals; human health and ecological risk assessments methodologies including:
    • problem formulation
    • exposure assessment
    • effects assessment and risk characterization
  • Knowledge of acceptable sources of screening levels and food-web modeling methods
  • Knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and guidance including RCRA, CERCLA, Virginia’s Voluntary Remediation Program, and EPA Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund (RAGS)
  • Ability to access scientific literature and risk information systems
  • Skills pertaining to technical research and evaluation techniques in conducting policy analysis and performing quantitative risk assessments
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Personnel computer skills, to include specialized software applications such as model simulation in the areas of exposure and risk assessment
  • Ability to solve problems timely and make common sense, results–oriented decisions
  • Ability to balance risk assessment with risk management
  • Combination of education, training, and experience in the disciplines of toxicology, engineering, geology, hydrogeology, environmental site investigation, and cleanup processes, practices, and principles
  • Working knowledge of CERCLA and National Contingency Plan, RCRA Corrective Action, and the Voluntary Remediation Program
  • A Real ID or U.S. passport is required to access certain facilities.
  • This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
