Department Summary

Mission or Goal of Unit: Provide leadership in the areas of rehabilitation psychology and neuropsychology to the Commonwealth of Virginia with the goal of improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by maximizing independence in living skills and employment activities through innovative education, evidence-based research, and outcome-focused patient care.

Chief Purpose of this Position: The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is seeking a dedicated Clinical Psychologist to join our team in delivering exceptional outpatient rehabilitation psychology services while advancing our mission of education, innovation, and research.

Clinical

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct clinical psychological assessments of adults with traumatic or acquired brain injuries, stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, brain tumors, neurological disorders, and other disabling illnesses or injuries.
  • Provide evidence-based interventions, including psychoeducation; therapeutic interventions to support adjustment to disability for patients, families, and caregivers; behavior management; and pain management.
  • Provide consultation to referral sources and interdisciplinary treatment teams; collaborate regarding patients' cognitive and behavioral strengths and weaknesses and neurobehavioral needs; and improve patients' and families' psychological well-being through the development and implementation of intervention plans based on interviews, observations, and test findings.
  • Prepare and submit documentation in a timely manner, including reports and progress notes; serve as a liaison among psychology staff, referring professionals, patients, and families.

Teaching

  • Provide didactic and informal presentations in university, hospital, and community settings, as available.
  • Assist in the training and evaluation of fellows, house staff, and students assigned to the rehabilitation team.
  • Provide oversight and formal supervision, as appropriate, for psychology learners.

Research

  • Participate in research activities aligned with the clinician's interests while supporting ongoing and new projects, as appropriate, within the context of clinical care.

Service

  • Serve on university and department committees, as requested.
  • Participate in activities sponsored by advocacy and service organizations that support individuals with disabilities.
  • Contribute to the field of psychology through participation in professional organizations

Other (Administrative And Related Duties)

  • Contribute to the development of clinical, academic, and research programs that support the continued excellence and growth of the VCU PM&R Rehabilitation Psychology Service.
  • Meet departmental needs as defined by the lead rehabilitation psychology clinician and department chair.
  • Represent the department at official meetings, as requested.
  • Attend scheduled Grand Rounds, staff conferences, and lectures, as requested.
  • Maintain professional credentials and complete continuing education requirements as required by the hospital, university, and state practice organizations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D., and licensed or license-eligible to practice psychology in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Completion of an internship/postdoctoral training with relevant experience in rehabilitation psychology, neuropsychology, and/or health psychology
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated record of strong academic achievement
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pain management
  • Experience working with patients in medical settings and/or with individuals adjusting to new injuries or illnesses, as well as strong clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of traditional psychological disorders (e.g., anxiety and mood disorders)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new evidence-based clinical initiatives
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and openness to new experiences, with a commitment to contributing to a fulfilling and dynamic professional environment
