Job Description

The Phlebotomy Instructor is responsible for teaching and guiding students in the principles and techniques of phlebotomy. The instructor ensures students gain the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for safe and effective blood collection, as well as prepares them for certification and entry into the healthcare workforce. This role includes curriculum delivery, student mentorship, and fostering a positive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruction and Training:

    • Deliver lectures and hands-on demonstrations on phlebotomy procedures, safety protocols, and patient interaction.
    • Provide clear and effective instruction on proper venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, specimen handling, and equipment usage.
  • Curriculum Development:

    • Develop and/or adapt lesson plans that align with certification standards and industry requirements.
    • Update course materials as needed to incorporate new techniques and regulations.
  • Student Assessment:

    • Evaluate students' performance through written tests, practical exams, and observation during clinical practice.
    • Provide constructive feedback and additional support to ensure skill mastery.
  • Compliance and Safety:

    • Teach and enforce adherence to OSHA, HIPAA, and other applicable standards.
    • Ensure all instructional activities comply with the organization’s policies and regulations.
  • Professional Development:

    • Stay updated with advancements in phlebotomy practices and technologies.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities to maintain certification and enhance instructional skills.
  • Administrative Duties:

    • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and performance.
    • Collaborate with staff to schedule classes, coordinate clinical practice sessions, and manage supplies.

Qualifications

  • Education and Certification:

    • High school diploma or GED (required).
    • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program (required).
    • Current certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT or equivalent).
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in phlebotomy in a clinical setting.
    • Previous teaching or training experience preferred but not required.
  • Skills:

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to create an engaging and supportive learning environment.
    • Proficiency in using instructional aids and technology, such as presentations and simulation equipment.
  • Other Requirements:

    • Current CPR/BLS certification.
    • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
    • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and professional classroom atmosphere.
