Finish Specialist — Historic Window & Door Restoration

About the Role
Vintage Glass Works specializes in the restoration of historic windows, doors, and architectural millwork for significant historic sites. We're looking for an experienced Finisher to join our shop team, responsible for the final finishing of restored and reproduced window sashes, doors, and associated trim elements. This is a shop-based, hands-on role for a craftsperson who takes pride in producing durable, historically accurate finishes.
What You'll Do
- Prepare, prime, and finish window sashes, doors, and trim using both paint and stain systems
- Apply finishes via brush, roller, and spray equipment, selecting the appropriate method for each piece and finish type
- Mix and match custom stain colors to meet project specifications and historic accuracy requirements
- Final surface preparation (sanding, cleaning, filling, and priming) to ensure proper finish adhesion and longevity
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe finishing area, including proper handling of finishing materials and equipment
- Manage your workflow and production schedule to keep pace with shop timelines
- Maintain consistent quality across repetitive work on multiple pieces from the same project
- Collaborate with restoration carpenters and project managers to meet project specs and deadlines
- Maintain and troubleshoot spray equipment as-required
What We're Looking For
- 5 years of professional finishing experience, ideally in millwork, cabinetry, historic restoration, or a related trade
- Proven experience with both paint and stain finishes on wood substrates, experience with metal finishing is a plus
- Skilled in brush, roller, and spray application techniques
- Experience custom-mixing and matching stains preferred, but not required
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship
- Familiarity with historic preservation standards or practices a plus
- Reliable, punctual, and able to manage time across multiple concurrent projects
Work Environment
This is a full-time, shop-based position at our Gardiner, ME location. The role involves standing for extended periods, working with finishing materials and spray equipment, and lifting/moving window sashes, doors, and trim pieces.
