Position Summary
The Public Works Field Supervisor is a full-time, front-line leadership role within the Village of Winneconne’s Department of Public Works and reports directly to the director of public works. This position is responsible for overseeing and actively participating in the daily operations and maintenance of public infrastructure, including streets, parks, cemeteries, buildings, and utility systems.
The Field Supervisor leads work crews, coordinates field activities, and ensures that services are delivered efficiently, safely, and to high standards of quality. This role requires strong operational knowledge, hands-on leadership, and the ability to respond quickly to emergencies such as water main breaks. The ideal candidate is organized, experienced in municipal field operations, and skilled at fostering a respectful, productive, and safety-focused work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and work alongside crews performing maintenance of streets, parks, cemeteries, public buildings, and the compost site.
- Lead snow removal operations and coordinate seasonal response activities.
- Oversee and assist with maintenance of the water distribution, sewer collection, and stormwater systems.
- Monitor work quality, productivity, and safety compliance on job sites.
- Coordinate daily work schedules, assign tasks, and ensure timely completion of projects.
- Respond to emergency situations, including after-hours infrastructure failures.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and the public.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure, effectively manage confrontational situations, and de-escalate conflicts with professionalism and empathy when interacting with upset residents.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical training in public works, construction management, utilities, or a related field preferred.
- Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in public works operations, construction, utility maintenance, or heavy equipment operation; or a combination of education, experience, and certifications that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Prior supervisory or crew leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of municipal field operations and infrastructure systems.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and work orders.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Availability for emergency call-ins and after-hours response.
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license: Class A CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office.
Position Classification & Hours
- This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
- At the discretion of the department head, hours of work may vary due to workload or seasonal changes.
- Standard hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Salary & Benefits
- Starting salary range: $54,461 – $62,577 DOE (depending on experience).
