We seek qualified applicants for the new full-time position of Public Safety Technology Technician in the Information Technology Department to support the IT and public safety communications initiatives related to police, fire, 911 dispatch center/emergency operations, and public works operations. This position will primarily support police operations including 154 sworn and non-sworn staff, the largest part-time fire department in the State of Illinois with a staff of 141, and an internal 911 dispatching center and emergency management operations with 69 staff.
Key Responsibilities
This position will provide intermediate and advanced end-user technical support including desktop hardware support, application installation, patching, system security, and other public safety communication solutions for critical public safety communications and technology systems across all public safety functions including police, fire, 911 dispatch emergency center, and public works operations. The role requires regular interaction with vendors to track new features or functionality, resolve open support tickets, and to coordinate and plan upgrades. Will create current and accurate system documentation, coordinate and/or perform testing of system modifications, and develop, provide, or coordinate system training, educational tools, and materials. Research, evaluate, and recommend new initiatives and concepts that can provide innovative and forward-thinking solutions to public safety operations. Implement public safety software, hardware, and other communication initiatives.
This position will also have a dual reporting relationship and will collaborate with the Public Safety Communications Manager on public safety and IT technology initiatives and goals. Will escalate public safety technology and communication issues to the Public Safety Communications Manager for review and direction and also collaborate with public safety department heads and/or their designee(s) as needed to ensure public safety department operational needs are being met.
Due to the critical nature of emergency communications, the incumbent is occasionally required to act immediately to resolve emergency situations working closely with public safety department heads and/or their designee(s) to resolve critical emergency technology & communication issues. Availability and quick response time outside of regular hours is required.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
This position requires an Associate's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field with a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience working with public safety technology and operations systems including but not limited to CAD, in-vehicle technology stacks, radio communications, and supporting public safety operations for police, fire, emergency dispatching, and/or public works. A valid driver’s license is also required.
Preferred experience includes working with Getac computers, body worn camera, and in-vehicle video systems, Central Square One Solution CAD and records management systems, brother in-vehicle printers, Fireworks records management systems, Fusus real-time crime center, Genetec video and license plate reading system, Flock license plate reading and video platform, iPhone, mobile routers such as Sierra or Cradle point, Windows 11, and Office365 applications.
Our ideal candidate will possess an outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and be self-motivated with a creative approach to problem solving. They will have in-depth, hands-on knowledge of and experience with end-user support in a public safety environment including police, fire, and dispatch operations and the ability to respond to critical situations immediately. They will work well in a fast-paced environment that requires them to travel to specific work locations for police, fire, and dispatch to perform job duties. They will understand the critical nature of public safety communications and have the ability to work on a cross-functional team of public safety stakeholders to meet the needs of the Village's public safety initiatives.
