Director of Public Works

Overview

The Village of South Range is seeking a full-time Director of Public Works for an immediate opening. This hands-on leadership position oversees public works employees and daily operations while helping maintain the Village’s infrastructure, equipment, and public facilities.

This position is located in South Range, Michigan. Availability for emergency call-outs, such as water leaks and other urgent infrastructure issues, is required.

Duties

• Supervise public works employees, plan and assign daily tasks, and ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
• Oversee and assist with water and sewer operations, including sampling, water meter maintenance, lagoon maintenance, and required reporting.
• Coordinate and perform snow removal, road maintenance, garbage collection, groundskeeping, and maintenance of Village parks and buildings.
• Manage equipment maintenance and repairs, purchasing, and work records.
• Communicate and coordinate with government agencies, including the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), regarding inspections, permits, required reporting, and regulatory compliance.
• Coordinate utility locating requests and maintain accurate records of related work.
• Respond to emergency call-outs.
• Work with the Village President and Village Council and attend Council meetings as required.

Qualifications

• Required: Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or higher and proven leadership experience.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to perform hands-on public works duties and operate equipment safely.
• Preferred: Michigan S4 Water certification and Michigan L1 Wastewater/Lagoon certification.
• Experience in municipal public works, water and sewer systems, equipment operation, and maintenance is preferred.

Applicants with the required CDL and proven leadership experience will be considered without the preferred certifications. The successful applicant will be expected to obtain the S4 and L1 certifications, with training and certification costs paid by the Village.
