POSITION DESCRIPTION

FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

Paramedics work as part of the healthcare team, under the license of our physicians' medical director, to develop plans of care, and coordinate or provide transportation to appropriate receiving facilities. These activities are performed in accordance with our current evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and are within the current State of Wisconsin defined scope of practice. Paramedics are responsible for verbal, written, and other forms of technical reporting. Paramedics may be assigned and perform other duties to support the delivery of service.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Provides appropriate and compassionate support to other responders, patients, and patient's families as needed.

· Assures service readiness of assigned vehicle(s), communications equipment, medical and other equipment, as well as medical and other supplies.

· Manages scenes of requests for assistance to ensure the safety of all involved.

· Responds to calls for assistance in an emergency vehicle, typically a transport ambulance, to develop plans of care, provide medical therapies, and coordinate or provide transportation to appropriate receiving facilities.

· Follows department procedures for the stocking, use, and security of controlled substances.

· Assists with the provision of medical care at hospitals, as requested by medical staff, within the limitations set forth by the current scope of practice as defined by the State of Wisconsin.

· Provides medical therapies in accordance with current clinical practice guidelines and within the limitation set forth by the current scope of practice as defined by the department and the State of Wisconsin.

· Extricates, removes, or assists in the extrication and/or removal of patients from the scene of a motor vehicle crash, man-made catastrophe, or natural catastrophe.

· Maintains the ambulance in a clean condition and working order.

· Assures safe care and transportation of ill and injured patients.

· Communicates effectively and respectfully with the communication center, other responding personnel, medical control physicians, receiving facilities, patients, patient’s families, and bystanders.

· Participates in training programs to enhance First Responders from PFD and other departments in Portage County.

· Assists with cleaning to ensure the crew quarters, department and surrounding areas are clean, organized, and kept in a safe and acceptable condition.

· Uses approved equipment, personal protective equipment, and guidelines/procedures necessary to gain access to the patients.

· Assists and/or participates in other initiatives or tasks not specifically identified in the duties and responsibilities document as determined by department management.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required. An associate degree or bachelor's degree in paramedicine or another related field is preferred.
• Continuing education to maintain paramedic certification or licensure along with completion of ICS and NIMS training, and current certification in ACLS, CPR, and PALS or their equivalents is required. Additional medical courses and certifications are preferred.
• Current paramedic licensure with the State of Wisconsin. Current National Registry certification is preferred.
• Current valid driver's license with the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle within the State of Wisconsin
• Ability to proficiently utilize technology and software
• Acceptable criminal history and employment background.
• A minimum of two years of verifiable experience in EMS is preferred.
• Possess good critical thinking skills and emotional intelligence.
• A genuine desire to assist others and function as part of a team.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS:

· Knowledge of airway management. Including, but not limited to, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal adjuncts, extraglottic adjuncts, direct and video orotracheal intubation, cricothyroidotomy, and pharyngeal and tracheobronchial suctioning.

· Knowledge of ventilatory support. Including, but not limited to, bag valve mask, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), transport ventilator, and needle chest decompression.

· Knowledge of circulation/ shock management. Including, but not limited to, intravenous cannulation, vagal stimulation, multi-lead ECG interpretation, cardioversion, defibrillation, and transcutaneous pacing.

· Knowledge of patient assessment. Including, but not limited to, a rapid trauma survey, focused and general physical assessment, social and medical history, triage, and prioritization of care and transportation.

· Knowledge of medication and administration. Including, but not limited to, all medication referenced in current clinical practice guidelines and within the scope of practice as defined by the State of Wisconsin and administration via intravenous, intraosseous, intramuscular, nebulized, atomized, sublingual, rectal, and oral routes.

· Ability to safely and calmly perform duties associated with paramedicine in a variety of settings and conditions.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of the roadways, major landmarks, and business establishments within the primary service area is preferred.

· Knowledge of traffic ordinances and laws pertaining to the operation of emergency vehicles.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· The physical demands described here are representatives of those that must be met by a paramedic to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

· While performing the duties of this job, the paramedic is regularly required to speak and hear. Specific vision abilities required by paramedics include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust and focus. Vision must be 20/20 or better, or correctable to 20/20 or better.

· The paramedic is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, crouch, stoop, and kneel, and may occasionally be required to crawl or climb. The paramedic will frequently use arms and hands to reach, palpate, lift or handle objects, tools, or controls. The paramedic must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 125 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 125 pounds.

· Must be able to satisfactorily pass an occupational health assessment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

· The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a paramedic encounters while performing functions of this position.

· While performing the duties of this job, the paramedic occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and risk of radiation.

· The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.

· The paramedic is also frequently required to don and doff various types and levels of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by circumstances and in accordance with clinical practice guidelines, standard operating procedures, and guidelines.
