Position Overview
The Village of Middleport, Ohio is seeking a community-oriented, progressive, and highly collaborative leader to serve as its next Chief of Police.
Operating under the general direction of the Mayor and Village Council, the Chief of Police serves as the administrative and operational head of the Police Department. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader who embraces the unique dynamics of small-town policing, fosters strong community relationships, and mentors a dedicated team of full-time and part-time officers.
Key Responsibilities
· Department Leadership: Direct all day-to-day operations, including patrol, investigations, code enforcement, and community policing initiatives.
· Budgetary Management: Prepare, justify, and administer the annual departmental budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and maximizing available resources.
· Hands-on Support: Actively patrol and respond to calls for service alongside field officers when necessary to maintain community safety.
· Policy & Compliance: Establish, review, and enforce departmental policies, general orders, and procedures in alignment with Ohio Revised Code (ORC) standards.
· Community Engagement: Maintain high visibility within the village, attending council meetings, school functions, and civic events to build public trust.
· Training & Development: Oversee recruitment, retention, and ongoing tactical and ethical training for all departmental personnel.
· Grants: Write and apply for grants.
Required Qualifications
· Certification: Must possess an active, valid Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) Certification.
· Experience: Minimum of 5 to 7 years of full-time law enforcement experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or command-staff rank (Sergeant or higher).
· Education: High School Diploma or GED required; an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred.
· Specialized Training: Completion of advanced leadership training is highly desirable.
· Licensure: Possess a valid State of Ohio Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
· Background Check: Ability to successfully pass an extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, truth verification exam, and drug screening.
