Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled duties in the installation of water mains and sanitary sewers, and may perform or be trained in other related activities in any or all of the following divisions of the Public Works Department: Forestry and Streets divisions.
- Maintains and repairs water distribution system including broken water mains, distribution valves, B-boxes, fire hydrants, using shovels, wrenches, and other related items.
- Maintains and repairs Village sewage collection system when blockage occurs, using a jetting/root-cutting machine; checks, televises and flushes system to identify and correct potential problems; cleans laterals, collectors, manholes and trunk sewer lines.
- Repairs both commercial and residential water meters, inspects meter installations for defective operation, leakage or other related difficulties, replaces meters and cables, installs new meters and outside read-outs, installs water shut-off valves.
- Investigates customer complaints, tests and disassembles various sizes of water meters, cleans mechanisms, repairs or replaces worn or defective parts.
- Turns water on and off for water leaks, delinquent bills and new accounts, and vacant buildings.
- Repairs yards using shovels, rakes, tampers, and other hand equipment; and repairs fences using posts and concrete.
- Assists in the snow and ice removal program operating a front-end loader to load salt, a pickup truck with a plow, and 1-ton, 2-1/2-ton, and 5-ton dump trucks with plows and salt spreaders.
- Assists in the brush pickup program utilizing a chipper for the disposal of branches and tree parts; assists in tree trimming using a trimmer and loading tree parts into a truck.
- Performs minor maintenance on tools and equipment, such as changing filters and oil on concrete saws and using vises to disassemble pipes and meters.
- Follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor. Reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible, but no later than end of the employee's work shift. Follows recognized safe work practices.
- Responds to emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Performs other duties, as requested or assigned by immediate supervisor, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated.

- Requires possession of a valid class B Illinois commercial driver’s license (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
