Street Superintendent

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The work involves responsibility for leading and participating in the construction, maintenance and repair of village streets. The incumbent performs semi-skilled work related to constructing, maintaining and repairing streets as well as supervising employees. Does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:The incumbent has important technical and supervisory work involving responsibility for planning and conducting the repair of village streets. This position differs from that of a Street Maintainer in that a Street Superintendent routinely oversees a crew and has responsibility for the work performed. General direction is received from the Mayor and Village Board permitting employee considerable latitude for inde­pendently planning and carrying projects into operation. Supervision is exercised over a small number of employees.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Leads in the day-to-day maintenance and repair of village streets and sidewalks including street cleaning, snow removal, setting grades and paving, pouring and finishing cement and rebuilding storm sewer boxes;

Observes the work performed and inspects its final completion in order to ensure safety, effectiveness and efficiency;

Performs semi-skilled tasks related to the construction, maintenance and repair of streets and sidewalks including masonry and concrete work;

Supervises and participates in the maintenance of village buildings and parks;

Supervises rubbish and garbage collection;

Ensures security of tools, equipment and materials and that the crew is equipped with the appropriate tools, materials and equipment;

Creates and maintains records of activities and prepares reports.

Operates trucks, tractors and other motor equipment;

Does related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Good knowledge of common methods practices of street maintenance, repair and con­struction; good knowledge of municipal ordinances related to street construction, maintenance, and repair; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to perform semi-skilled tasks related to street construction, maintenance, and repair; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; reliability and resourcefulness; good judgment; good physical condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of satis­factory experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets or similar experience and training sufficient to indicate the ability to do the work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS: Possession of a valid New York State CDL Class A or B license within nine (9) months of appointment.
