Duties
- Perform comprehensive diagnostics on diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, air brake systems, electrical systems, and other heavy equipment components using schematics and diagnostic tools.
- Conduct repairs and maintenance on municipal machinery such as garbage trucks, plows, fire trucks, and other municipal equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Fabricate parts or components as needed using welding and hand tools to meet OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues related to suspension, alignment, HVAC systems, power tools, tire service, and electrical diagnostics to minimize downtime.
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on all heavy equipment, and service vehicles including vehicle maintenance tasks like brake repair and diesel engine repair.
- Use heavy lifting techniques safely when replacing large parts or assemblies; operate heavy equipment as necessary for testing or repairs.
- Maintain detailed service records, schematics interpretation, and diagnostic reports to ensure accurate documentation of all work performed.
Experience
- Proven experience working as a diesel mechanic in dealership settings or with heavy equipment servicing is highly preferred.
- Strong mechanical knowledge with hands-on experience in automotive diagnostics, electrical diagnostics, welding, fabrication, and troubleshooting complex machinery issues.
- Familiarity with municipal equipment and maintenance including pickups, garbage trucks, firetrucks, and all related equipment.
- Skilled in using power tools, hand tools, soldering equipment, and diagnostic software for electrical systems.
- Knowledge of OEM standards for vehicle maintenance and repair procedures; experience reading schematics is essential.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely while working on large machinery or components; experience with tire service is a plus.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to municipal officials or other employees.
