What are the responsibilities and job description for the Garden Management Crew Leader position at Village Green Landscaping?
Garden Management Crew Leader
Village Green Landscaping — Holliston and Needham, MA
$32 – $38 / hour · Full-Time
Village Green Landscaping is looking for a Garden Management Crew Leader who takes pride in creating and maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces. You'll lead a small crew focused on (but not limited to) fine gardening - pruning, planting, perennial management, seasonal color, and hands-on property care for residential clients across the western suburbs of Boston.
This isn't a mow-and-blow role. We're looking for someone who knows plants, cares about the details, and can run a crew without someone looking over their shoulder.
WHO YOU ARE
We built our core values by looking at the people on our team who stand out — the ones we'd want to clone. If these sound like you, you'll fit right in.
1. Build and Protect Our Reputation: Do the right thing. Treat customers and teammates with respect. Deliver work you're proud to put your name on.
2. Be Relentlessly Reliable: Show up on time and follow through. Work is done right the first time. No excuses. No drama.
3. Always Improving: Raise the bar for yourself, your crew, and our clients. Leave things better than you found them. Seek progress, not perfection.
If you live these values, you'll thrive here. If they don't resonate, this probably isn't the right fit, and that's okay.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead a 2-3 person crew through daily garden management routes
- Pruning: shrubs, ornamental trees, perennial management etc.
- Planting: annuals, perennials, bulbs, container plantings, seasonal color rotations. Flex to larger planting and softscape installations when needed.
- Garden upkeep: deadheading, edging, weeding, mulching, bed maintenance
- Maintain property standards and identify opportunities to improve each site
- Communicate directly with homeowners: set expectations, take direction, flag concerns
- Keep your truck and equipment organized, maintained, and accounted for
- Train and develop crew members: share what you know, build the team up
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- Plant knowledge: You can identify common New England shrubs, perennials, and trees. You know when and how to prune them.
- Field experience: 3 years in fine gardening, garden maintenance, or a related horticultural role.
- Leadership: You've led or supervised a crew before. You can manage a day without being managed.
- Communication: Clear, professional communication with clients and teammates — in person, by text, phone, or email.
- Problem-solving: You make smart decisions in the field with confidence.
- Driver's license: Valid and clean (3 years). MA DOT card preferred.
- Physical ability: This is hands-on outdoor work. You're comfortable on your feet all day in all seasons.
- Snow Service availability preferred but not required. Full time winter work available with snow servcie experience.
WHAT WE OFFER
- $32–$38/hour based on experience, plus overtime and bonus opportunities
- Full-time, Monday–Friday schedule (7:00 AM – 4:00 PM typical)
- Work for a company that's been in the community since 1985
- Professional growth — we invest in our people and promote from within
- A team that takes the work seriously but doesn't take itself too seriously
- Substance-free workplace — we maintain a drug-free, alcohol-free, and cigarette-free environment during work hours and on company property
