POSITION OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the CEO, the Executive Director (ED) provides day-to-day leadership and operational oversight of the organization. This role is responsible for translating mission into action – ensuring programs are effective, sustainable, and responsive to the evolving needs of veterans. The ED oversees fundraising, financial management, program performance, staff leadership and external partnerships. This is a hands-on leadership role suited for someone who can operate both strategically and operationally in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operational and Strategic Leadership
Serve as a steward of the organization’s mission and guide its continued growth and impact.
Develop and implement strategic priorities aligned with community needs and organizational capacity
Ensure programs remain responsive, effective, and grounded in measurable outcomes
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Establish performance metrics to evaluate programs and organizational effectiveness.
Stakeholder Engagement and Fund Development
Strengthen partnerships that enhance service delivery and organizational reach
Serve as a key representative with government agencies, community partners, and funders
Lead and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy, including major gifts, grants, corporate partnerships, and events
Strengthen donor relationships and expand the organization’s funding base
Partner with the board to enhance fundraising capacity and engagement
Oversee development communications, including proposals and impact reporting.
Financial Management
Oversee organizational budgeting, financial planning, and fiscal performance
Maintain strong internal controls and ensure responsible stewardship of resources
Provide clear and accurate financial reporting to the board
Ensure compliance with all financial and regulatory requirements
Governance & Compliance
Work closely with the Board of Directors to support governance and strategic oversight
Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and funding requirements
Proactively address risks and maintain organizational integrity
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred (e.g., public administration, business, social work, or related field)
Leadership Experience
5–10 years of progressive leadership experience, ideally in nonprofit, social services, housing, or behavioral health
Prior experience in an executive or senior leadership role with operational and financial responsibility
Demonstrated success managing teams, budgets, and multi-faceted programs.
Mission Alignment
Commitment to serving vulnerable populations, particularly veterans
Strong judgment, emotional intelligence, and the ability to lead in dynamic or high-pressure situations
Military service is valued but not required
Fundraising and Financial Acumen
Proven ability to lead fundraising efforts across multiple revenue streams
Experience managing complex budgets and financial reporting
Knowledge and Skills
Understanding of nonprofit governance and regulatory compliance
Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders
Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors
Ability to build partnerships and navigate complex service systems
