Position Title: After School Academy Instructor

Employment Type: Part-Time; 12 hours/week. Pay Range: $19.25 - $20.50

Location: Brentwood, CA Level: Entry-Level 

Reports To: Program Manager

Work Days/Hours: Academic Year, Tuesday-Thursday afternoon/evening 

  • Occasional Mondays/Fridays, evenings, and weekends may be required 

Work Remotely: No           

Requirements: Must pass Live Scan background check.


Position Summary: 

This entry-level position, available immediately, is an exciting opportunity to join the staff team at VCRC. This position will provide opportunities to work directly with the students of the community and to give them the tools to empower them in their education. Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the After School Academy (ASA) Instructor will be responsible for bringing energy and optimism to their work with K-8th grade students, supporting the Program Manager, and providing administrative support. The After School Academy provides K-8th grade students with the personal attention and support they need to enhance their confidence, self-esteem, improve their academic skills, and recognize their potential as community leaders. Students in the program receive literacy support, homework assistance, and exposure to study skill strategies, and enrichment activities. Students also have the opportunity to attend field trips and extra-curricular activities during school intercessions.

Village Community Resource Center (VCRC) is a community-based nonprofit organization that serves struggling families in Far East Contra Costa County. VCRC’s mission is to provide information, support, and coordination of resources to empower and improve the quality of life of disadvantaged children and their families in a culturally sensitive environment. We work with children and families on challenges teaching them to be responsible for choices, live with integrity and honesty, become self-sufficient and educated citizens with the hope of nurturing lifelong learners. We strengthen our community by providing prevention-based education and youth development, health, and family leadership programs.  


Position Responsibilities 

Student Instruction: 

Help students during After School Academy sessions with tasks including but not limited to: 

Literacy Development, Homework completion, Daily reading assignments, Math fact review, Critical thinking skills 

Lead small and large group activities 

Provide individual support to students struggling with concepts, through varying and creative means of instruction 

Maintain ongoing communication with students, parents, school teachers, and staff as it pertains to the Afterschool Academy program

Management of conflicts, or issues that arise during the Afterschool Academy 


Planning and Administration: 

Complete daily progress notes within database 

Maintain behavior and incident logs as required 

Assist in organizing and updating student records including registration, attendance, test scores, report cards, and general statistical data 

Assist in program assessment under the supervision of the Program Manager 

Assist in planning and implementing special events, field-trips, new curriculum and special programs 

Preparation of flyers, literature or other educational programming needs 

Assist Program Manager with administrative tasks including but not limited to copying, typing, filing, receive incoming and outgoing mail, answering phones, schedule appointments, assist in fundraisers 

Maintain inventory of program materials and supplies 

Maintain and participate in the cleaning and organization of a workspace free of clutter 

Answer and respond to emails in a timely manner 

Other duties as assigned 


Qualifications & Experience 

Education: High school or equivalent (Preferred) 

Experience: Tutoring: 1 year (Preferred) 

Bilingual Fluency (Spanish/English) 

Proficiency in various computer applications including, but not limited to Google Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Office, etc.

Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with a diversity of people and motivate students, parents, and partners 

Self-motivated, with the ability to work collaboratively on a variety of tasks simultaneously Ability to speak clearly and persuasively, including group facilitation skills 

Strong organizational skills and computer proficiency 

Results-oriented, goal-driven, team approach to work 

Knowledge of issues affecting low-income children and families
