Job Summary

The Medication Technician / Caregiver (Hybrid) is responsible for both safe medication assistance and hands-on resident care. This role follows physician orders, community policies, and state regulations while supporting residents with daily activities, engagement, and personal care.

In memory care, the goal is simple but not easy: keep residents safe, calm, and engaged, while preserving as much independence and dignity as possible.

You’ll work under the direction of the Director of Health and Wellness and/or Executive Director and may float between Assisted Living and Memory Care based on community needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Medication Management

  • Assist residents with daily medications and treatments according to assignments, physician orders, and scope of practice.
  • Ensure medications are taken or applied correctly; document refusals or missed doses and notify the supervisor and/or Executive Director.
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and confidential medication and care records in accordance with policy and state regulations.
  • Keep medication carts and medication rooms clean, organized, properly stocked, and securely locked.
  • Participate in narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift; immediately report discrepancies to the Director of Health and Wellness, Director of Memory Care, or Wellness Coordinator.
  • Track new orders, medication changes, and refills to ensure residents do not run out of medications.
  • Prepare medications for administration in accordance with the community’s Medication Policy.

Direct Care & ADLs

  • Provide personal care and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, incontinence care, transfers, and ambulation.
  • Assist residents with meals, hydration, and snacks as outlined in their care/service plans.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable living environment (light housekeeping related to resident care).
  • Assist residents with routine and recreational activities to help them maintain their highest possible level of functioning.
  • Work patiently and calmly with residents who have dementia or other cognitive impairments.

Engagement & Memory Care Support

  • Support activity programs by encouraging residents to participate and stay engaged.
  • Use redirection, reassurance, and calm communication techniques to reduce agitation, anxiety, and challenging behaviors.
  • Observe and promptly report changes in resident behavior, mood, or cognition to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Promote a structured, predictable environment that supports memory care residents’ sense of safety and comfort.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Communicate with physicians, pharmacies, families, and other staff as appropriate and within scope.
  • Carry a radio and/or pager as assigned; respond promptly to resident calls, alarms, and emergencies.
  • Participate in shift report, in-services, and care conferences as requested.
  • Support the community’s marketing efforts through professional, friendly interactions with visitors and during tours.
  • Encourage teamwork and maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers and other departments.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow infection control practices at all times (hand hygiene, PPE, universal precautions, bloodborne pathogen procedures).
  • Maintain all required licenses/certifications and continuing education required by state law and community policy.
  • Report occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals according to policy.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for residents, staff, and visitors; follow all safety and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Director of Health and Wellness, Wellness Coordinator, Director of Memory Care, or Executive Director.

Qualifications

Education

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medication certification may be required depending on state or board rules.
  • Additional certifications (CNA, HHA, etc.) may be required or preferred per state regulations.

Experience

  • 1) One (1) year of experience in a health care environment (assisted living, memory care, SNF, home health, etc.);

AND/OR

  • 2) One (1) year of experience in a direct-care role such as Med Tech, CNA, HHA, or similar position working with older adults.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to do simple mathematical calculations (counts, inventory, basic med-related math).
  • Ability to work patiently and calmly with cognitively impaired individuals.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English; able to follow oral and written directions.
  • Able to work independently once trained while always prioritizing resident safety.
  • Familiarity with, or ability to learn, the community’s fire plan, disaster plan, and safety protocols.

Equipment

  • Use of standard household equipment (dishwasher, washer, dryer, vacuum, etc.).
  • Use of standard office and communication equipment, including telephone, fax machine, printer, copy machine, and personal computer for documentation and communication.

Physical & Mental Requirements

  • Must be mobile and able to assist residents with activities of daily living.
  • Frequent walking and standing; regular bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and climbing as needed in the course of care.
  • Ability to push wheelchairs, assist residents to sit/stand, and help with transfers (with or without assistance, per policy).
  • Sufficient vision to read labels, MARs, and documentation and to observe resident condition and environment.
  • Sufficient hearing to communicate in person and by phone, and to respond to alarms, residents, and call systems.
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing assigned tasks in a fast-paced, sometimes high-stress environment.

  • Shows genuine concern for residents’ physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs.

Working Conditions

  • Air-conditioned, well-lighted health care environment.
  • Frequent interaction with a senior population, including residents with dementia and other cognitive impairments.
  • In memory care, ability to work in a secured area with heavy interaction with a cognitively impaired population.
  • Work Location: In person at the community.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $19.00 - $19.50 per hour
