About the Role
Vigilantics is seeking professional, reliable Switchboard Operators / Police Dispatchers to support communications operations at the Northport VA Medical Center. In this role, you’ll be the first point of contact for patients, families, staff, and emergency responders—answering and routing calls, handling emergency codes, and coordinating paging and radio communications.
This position is onsite at the medical center and requires strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and calm performance under pressure.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer and route a high volume of incoming calls using multi-line telephone console systems (e.g., Cisco Webex / Cisco Finesse).
- Provide general information such as departments, visiting hours, and directions within the medical center.
- Receive and process emergency and code calls, including:
- Activating overhead pages and digital pagers.
- Notifying and dispatching VA Police, fire, and clinical response teams.
- Confirming receipt of critical messages.
- Operate and monitor:
- Overhead paging systems.
- Radios and other communication devices for security and emergency response.
- Accurately log calls, messages, and incidents as required.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of hospital departments, extensions, and contact protocols.
- Handle all information in compliance with privacy and confidentiality requirements (e.g., patient and staff information).
- Provide courteous, professional customer service to callers from diverse backgrounds.
- Follow all facility policies, emergency procedures, and communication SOPs.
- Participate in ongoing training and quality assurance activities as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 1 year of experience in at least one of the following is strongly preferred:
- Switchboard / call center operations
- 911 / emergency dispatch
- Security, public safety, or hospital communications
- Strong verbal communication skills and professional phone etiquette.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and clear under pressure and during emergencies.
- Comfortable working with computers and learning new software systems.
- Able to read, follow, and apply written procedures accurately.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.
- Ability to work assigned shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be able to pass any required background checks, facility security processes, and badging requirements for work at a federal medical center.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a healthcare, hospital, or public safety environment.
- Prior work with multi-line phone systems, paging systems, and/or radio communications.
- Experience in roles requiring strict confidentiality and compliance (e.g., HIPAA/Privacy Act settings).
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus (but not required).
Schedule
- Multiple shifts may be available (days, evenings, nights).
- Weekend and holiday coverage required on a rotating basis.
- Overtime may be available based on operational needs.
