Shift: First – Part time
Job Hours: 20 hours weekly
Job Location: Gwinnett and Rockdale Counties
The base location for this position is: Gwinnett and Rockdale Counties
The Georgia Apex Project, an initiative from the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) to increase provision of School Base Mental Health (SBMH) services throughout the state. SBMH programs provide a continuum of mental health services to students and their families in the school setting. By placing mental health professionals in schools, SBMH programs increase access to needed mental health services, promote earlier identification of and intervention for mental health needs, and foster collaboration between mental health providers, school systems, and other community stakeholders.
Job Description:
Certified Peer Specialist - Youth (CPS-Y) will work as an integral part of our treatment team. He/She will be working with team under supervision of LPC to provide support to students from the lived experience point of view.
The services include:
- Listen to youths and family so that they can express and communicate their needs in their own words
- Provide support to youth, while they are balancing academic, family, community, and cultural life in a school environment
- Provide support in developing self-advocacy
- Provide support to youth who are struggling with behavioral health related issues
- Provide support to youth and family to gain access to behavioral health services
- Provide support and psychoeducation to school, youth/family to prevent youths from developing diagnosable mental health issues
- Provide psychoeducation to school, youths/family to decrease the stigma of mental health diagnoses and treatment
- Link youth and family to appropriate resources
Program Specific Duties:
- May travel in Gwinnett, Rockdale, and Newton County to visit students at various schools.
- Work hours may vary depending on school schedules.
- Documentation of service provided.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Job Requirements/Competencies:
- Must be Certified as Peer Specialist Youth
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must have valid Georgia driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record in accordance with company policy
- Self-motivated
- Must be able to lift 20 pounds
- Must be able to respond quickly to sounds
- Must be able to stand, sit, and kneel for long periods of time
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, move about, hear and speak.
- Willing to work flexible hours
- Candidates for selection must pass a criminal background check (including fingerprinting)
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and subject to random drug screens
Qualifications:
- Must be credentialed as a Certified Peer Specialist ~ Youth (CPS~Y) or eligible for CPS~Y certification and prepared to apply for certificate training program.
- Be 18-26 years of age (valid Georgia ID)
- Have a mental health (MH) condition, substance use disorder (SUD), or a co-occurring diagnosis; and a strong desire to identify themselves as a person living with a mental illness or substance use diagnosis; and
- Be able/willing to actively seek and manage your own appropriate care; and
- Be able to share their own personal story in a safe and appropriate way.
- Must be well grounded in recovery wellness.
- One year between diagnosis and application to training • If the individual has a substance use condition, there must be one year continuous abstinent from substance us.
NOTE:
Applicants must provide official transcripts for undergraduate and graduate degrees, copy of diploma for High School/GED, and official copy of professional license (if applicable) to be considered for an interview.
