VETERANS SERVICE OFFICER (VSO)
Summary
The Veteran Services Officer (VSO) helps veterans and their families navigate the complexities of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits. The VSO ensures that veterans receive the full range of benefits they are entitled to based on their military service.
Reporting and Relationships
The VSO reports directly to the Director of the Veteran Service Department and will be based at 8719 Colesville Rd, Suite 100, Silver Spring, MD 20906. The role is primarily office-based, with possible alternate work locations approved by the manager. This is an exempt position.

A qualified candidate must have:
• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university OR a paralegal certification.
• At least one (1) year of consecutive experience as a VSO, with VA benefits, or in VA administrative services.
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Prior U.S. military service or background
• Strong communication skills both verbal and written
• Experience as an advocate with recognized Veterans Service Organization or direct work on VA benefits claims.
• Strong computer skills, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Working knowledge of VA benefits, healthcare laws, regulations, and procedures.
• The ability to multitask, prioritize, and respond with urgency.
• A demonstrated commitment to public service.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Serve as a subject matter expert on VA disability compensation programs and continuously expand knowledge through VVA training and other resources.
• Assist veterans and their dependents with applications for compensation, pensions, appeals, and other VA benefits. This includes gathering evidence, submitting written legal arguments, and representing veterans at formal and informal hearings both in person and via video conference.
• Review and monitor client cases to ensure all deadlines are met and VA rating decisions are accurate and complete.
• Maintain accurate and timely records of claims and assignments using the VVA case management system.
• Respond to inquiries and provide updates on claim status to veterans, dependents, VVA staff, Congress, VA officials, and other VVA representatives nationwide.
• Contribute to written VVA publications and guides, and provide feedback to the VA when requested, particularly on service benefits, healthcare issues, and electronic access.
• Complete all required VA and VVA training to maintain accreditation and ensure compliance with current procedures.
• Educate veterans and their families about available benefits at the federal, state, county, and local levels.
• Uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to public service.
