Position: Victim Advocate

A Victim Advocate provides trauma-informed services to victims, family members, and communities, impacted by crisis, violence, or tragedy by offering immediate crisis intervention and short/long term advocacy, via phone, text, chat, or in person to address the aftermath of their victimization. Furthermore, they offer immediate crisis intervention during unscheduled child watching services and facilitate age-appropriate and trauma-informed activities with children on site in the Children Who Witness Violence Drop-In Center.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clients with support (in person, chat, phone) using NOVA’s model of crisis intervention.
• Provide immediate, unscheduled child-watching services to children ages 6 weeks–18 years in the CWWV Drop-In Center while guardians attend court hearings.
• Encourage social, emotional, cognitive, language, and physical development through positive interactions with children of all developmental stages.
• Organize, facilitate, and participate in trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and age-appropriate activities.
• Supervise, observe, and monitor the safety of children and the environment.
• Develop professional relationships with clients through consistent follow-up based on their level of need.
• Empower victims to make informed decisions by providing options tailored to their individual needs.
• Support clients in creating and pursuing goals during the plan of action (case plan).
• Provide support throughout the judicial process within the Summit County Judicial System.
• Attend criminal or civil hearings and meetings with clients to provide advocacy and support.
• Educate clients on their rights and the process of applying or waiving their rights as a victim of crime.
• Assist with protection order paperwork, victim compensation paperwork, and VINE enrollment.
• Refer clients to outside providers when additional needs arise.
• Offer clients the opportunity to evaluate services.
• Participate as a member of the Summit County Crisis Response Team, including responding on scene.
• Provide on-call hotline and on-scene support to peers during designated shifts each month.
• Liaison with court personnel, first responders, emergency services, or hospital personnel when appropriate.
• Assist in training and onboarding staff, volunteers, and interns.
• Engage in required professional development and training.
• Hold volunteers and interns accountable for following policies and procedures.
• Maintain accurate documentation of all clients served.
• Represent the mission of the agency at all times.
• Respond within 30 minutes when requested to a scene.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
  
  
  

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferred).
• Ability to pass a state and federal background check throughout employment.
• Valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and reliable transportation.
• Must reside within 25 miles of VAP’s main office.
• Comfortable working with children, adults, and families in crisis.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Proficient with internet searches, email, and basic technology.
